First outing with the 30BR and question

Thanks for all the advice. I have a few questions regarding wind and flags, so I'll make a separate post. However, I will ask one now. When I was shooting I looked at my phone and it said 9mph winds with gusts of like 12mph, but I know what a 12mph gust feels like and it was much more than that in this area I was shooting in.

How much does wind effect a target at 100 yards? Can wind throw off a shot by a 1/4 inch or more?

Oh yea, and a lot more than that!! Gun handling too for that matter. Just setting up 2 flags and making sure they show the same direction and value for each shot makes a huge difference and will give you a big start in wind reading.

I have been using the plastic electric fence posts for many years.

They go on sale at Murdoch's or Tractor Supply now and then for cheap. They have a small spike on the bottom and a little ledge to step down and press the spike into the ground.

I plant one at the target, then sprinkle the rest back to my shooting point when doing bench work like zeroing. On prairie dog trips, I plant them about every 120 degrees around my table so I can watch for wind changes.

There is a lot of good advice in this thread. Each guy tunes his own way and as long as you get to the end result without staying in continuous load development then you are good to go. I try to tune in as few shots as possible to provide me as many competitive rounds as the barrel allows.

The wind flags are a must if you are going to be serious about small groups and/or knocking out dots. Flags and poles are a cheap investment that pays huge dividends. I would suggest a good set like Mr.Erwin has and you will never regret it. Good luck.

This is the best way that I have come up with for a down and dirty solution that works really great.

Fiberglass driveway marker. I removed the cap, inserted a nail from the back side, pushed the cap back on, then taped it for good measure. A sinker slide slips over the nail and a couple little zip ties prevent the sail tail from escaping. These work perfectly. The sinker slide rotates around and the sail tail never gets caught up in the pole.
