First Lever gun. Henry, Marlin or other ?

I was set to get a Rossi92 in 38/357 until I found out that they use 1:30 twist barrels!
what were they thinking?

I've got one of those on the list too. Will it stabilize 180s? I don't know much about pistol caliber twists.

The proper twist for heavy 357 bullets is 1:14 maybe up to 1:18.
My FA 357 revolver is 1:14 and shoots up to 220 grainers.

The Rossi R92 in 38/357 with the 1:30 twist will have trouble stabilizing a bullet over 158grs. The older rossi 1892's had a faster twist rate.

I ended up buying the Rossi R92 in 38/357 in Stainless steel with a 24" octagon Barrel. I bought it for shooting Lever action Pistol cartridge Silhouette and will probably only be shooting 125-158gr bullets. The LGS also had an 1873 Winchester in 357 which has a 1:18 twist barrel. The Rossi actually had a better finish and wood which is part of the reason I picked it. The other reason it that the Winchester was more than double the price of the rossi. Both of them had Awful triggers but I can fix that with a trigger job.

I also own a Remington-Marlin lever action rifle in 44Mag which has a 1:38 Twist. To get this thing to shoot a 240gr bullet, I have to push near max velocities. But shooting a 240gr bullet at almost 1800 fps can be punishing for 50 rounds! I ended up going to a 200gr bullet and much more pleasant to shoot.

I suggest anybody buying a Lever action Rifle to check the twist rate and see if it will fit your needs. if you want to shoot heavy bullets, make sure you have a fast enough twist rate as Lever actions go all over the place!

I have a like brand new Marlin 30 30 that I got in a trade. I think it's impressive. I threw it on the classifieds and no one wants it! I was very surprised. I think I'll just keep it
