I've got old Winchesters (71, 73, 92, 94), Browning (65, not as old), and Marlin (39, 92) but I have been impressed with my Marlin (Ruger) Dark 45-70. Shoots everything I've thrown at it decently. I've developed some fun 390gr hollow point subsonic rounds that I'm happy to shoot all day long (light recoil) that are accurate enough that I would be perfectly happy hunting with it.
Mounted a Leupold FX-II 2.5x scout scope, so just enough magnification to get the job done but not heavy, and you can leave both eyes open like a red dot if needed.
