FIREFORMING 220 RUSSIAN TO 6PPC

I'd use my tool, but would rather use yours so I don't have to adjust cut depth on mine. That's why I asked if you were running a 268 neck.
Jim

I really do appreciate your generous offer, but I have made up my mind. There is no reason I can't do them myself. I am going to start with ten and then do the rest when time allows. I am not in any hurry and I really do like DIY projects. When done you get a feeling of satisfaction and the chance to say I did it myself when asked by others.

You are a top notch guy and always willing to help others. I have been the benefactor of your advice in the past and it always worked out.

Thanks again

Nick

Thanks for the kind words sir. I’d be happy to step you through it if you’d like. Wish you were a little closer so I could show you in person. It isn’t hard. Let me know if I can be of assistance.

I have the expander and the neck turners and have made plenty of brass for my .262 neck 6PPC. But, now I make them with my left hand only. It is the hand I sign the check that goes to DJs (Actually buy them from Bob White at The Shooters Corner) but a great reason to go and visit Bob and save my physical energy for other things.

I have mad several searches on this topic. Ever thread has so many different opinions that this old mad is confused.

It seems to me that the simplest solution is to load 220 cases with .22 bullets using a shot out barrel and have at it. Is there a down side to this? Is there any reason I can't use a powder recommended for the 22PPC, such as CFE223 as I have plenty of this and loads of 22 bullets of various weights, I will most likely never use.

Once fireformed, I would expand and turn the necks.
I vote for DJ. Tommy Mc

I already have 220 russian brass but it is not prepped and ready to load. It is .22 cal. Using a burned out 6PPC barrel seems like an easy way to start. This will form the cases and they are then one step away from being turned. You can then expand the necks and turn them to whatever thickness is needed. In my case I have a .262 barrel so turning the necks means .008 thickness.
I use this method you are referring to. I turn the necks to .010” load a fire 22 cheap projectiles. Boom 6mm cases. Then finish turning the necks to ~.0082”. Be warned..... use a close berm or bank to fire them into as they are all over the place.
kind of fun blasting thru 50 rounds or so as fast as you can load, barrel is shot out anyway so what the heck...

When I first started shootings Benchrest, I expanded the 220 Russian necks, turned them, and fire formed with a full case of 133.

About 15 years ago, I started loading a cheap 22 bullet in the 220 Russian with a full case of 133 and fired them in an old 6PPC barrel. What cones out is a non neck turned Factory Lapua 6 PPC case if such an animal existed. I then turn the necks.

Either way works great, can’t see the difference on the target.

Just for your entertainment, here is a video of how I turn necks.
