Pffff. I only shoot customs! LOL yeah don't I wish. I love savage for what they are... but yes if I could afford it then every one of my guns would be a custom of course. :) Anyways the important thing is to shoot and enjoy. Hopefully you got a lot of enjoyment and learned a lot on your savages and you will keep that knowledge with you, share and help others, and keep learning as you continue to shoot on many different rifle platforms. :) - Justin

I agree 100%. They are very accurate guns and I have nothing against people who prefer them. I am always willing to share my knowledge of the Savage rifles with others for their benefit.

I have a full custom Rem 722 in the works right now. When complete, the only thing remaining from the factory will be the receiver metal. It is going to be one sweet little machine :)

I'm going to build my first rifle on a Model Seven action, I will use it mainly for hunting whitetails, coyotes, and hogs. I'll use a 22" barrel and light stock, should be sweet! :)

Well the old single one is a tad bit shorter than the newer one. If it is the older model, be careful of what you intend to chamber in it IF you plan on using the magazine well... If it is the newer model, disregard that last statement.. By the way>>>what do you plan on chambering it for?

6mm Dasher with detachable magazine.

Good luck to you with a mag fed 6mm Dasher. I would like to hear how this performs and the reliability of feeding/ejecting.

We'll be sure to keep you apprised of Ford v. Chevy v. Dodge threads. Methinks you might have some opinions there too. ;)

As I am in the midst of building a 6mmBR rifle and not having decided on an action, this thread is interesting. Everyone has specific needs and biases and those will guide what action is selected. I for one, like a fair price, good build quality, features, a trigger that hopefully will not have to be replaced, an inexpensive mag system, nor require too many upgrades to get it where I am satisfied with it. I am not into mega-buck guns, so I have to stick with factory actions. For me, and my needs, the Howa action best satisfies that. For others, it maybe the Remington, Savage, BigHorn, etc. I've yet to handle and operate a Savage and hope to do that this week. It may change my mind about the Howa, or it may reaffirm my choice of that action.

Phil, IIRC, you're in liberal ground zero, right? (i.e. between the Pacific and Pleasanton). If so, PM me and we can talk about your choices. I've BTDT -- excluding the Howa -- and you'd be welcome to look over some of my rigs. I'm north of Hooters at 580 and south of Costco at 680. 8)

Yes, I will call it near LGZ (Liberal Ground Zero). I could be further west in Berkeley or San Francisco, true Ground Zero. I will send you a PM.

Thanks.

Phil

Sounds like that will be a very nice shooting and handy little rifle Erik.

The the 722 I am building will be chambered in 243 LBC Turbo 40. Basically the "Dasher" version of the 6 PPC case. I will probably try to get it to feed from the BDL magazine mod I made to my 722. I know the 243 LBC T40 is a bit smaller than the actual 6 Dasher off the 6BR case, but if you fellas find some good little tricks to getting it to feed right and reliably, be sure to let me know so I can give it a try with my case feeding mods. Thanks so much.

Also, where are all these Savages beating customs at? I have yet to see them in the winners circle in top level competition, but yet, I keep hearing about it. ???

Savages can shoot, but they are not the best.

Eric
Im right here.

You don't count Jim...Plus anytime F/TR beats F/Open (especially on a Savage action vs BAT's, etc...) it's gotta be luck. :P

I handled for the first time, a Savage Precision Target Action. The bolt operation, light "red" AccuTrigger, finish, all seemed fine to me. A robust unit with a closed top and small port, it felt pretty beefy. I don't know if fit and finish are better on the Precision Target Actions vs other Savage, Stevens, or Axis actions, but this action was better than expected after reading plenty of negative opinions. I am perhaps insufficiently experienced to know any better, but for now, it seemed like a pretty good piece.

It's worth exactly what it costs. That's about it. But it can make a very accurate rifle and is a good value if you can grit your teeth and bear to deal with the Target Accutrigger.

To really make it better, a person would still want to fork up some money and have the heavy bolt lift timed and lightened. The excessive force needed to lift the bolt on cocking would not work well for a BR gun because you would be having to re-zero the rifle on target after each shot.

Never understood why it comes with a trigger and trigger guard, but no action screws???

Definitely a solid "beefy" action though.

I wish I could understand the problem with the Target AccuTrigger, but guess I just didn't see it when looking at the action today. This is perhaps due to not having seen other trigger designs, so I can't really compare. It was hard to accurately feel the bolt lift while just holding the action, but it does take enough force to disrupt a precise BR gun setup. But, I did not feel the lift was much different than some other factory actions I have operated. Again, I was holding the action in my hand.

No action screws. That is weird.

The thing that I liked least about the action was the appearance. Rather utilitarian and blocky. But, perhaps the trigger will join the party given experiences here.

Sell those Savage PTA's. Sell them all. Cheap.
