Filling a rear bag

Curious as to how much sand does it take to fill a Edgewood " Mini Gator" bag? Pounds/ounces? I will be using regular play sand.

Will depend on how firm you fill it. Edgewood claims 13-16 with heavy, play sand is about half the weight of heavy.

I've had a number of edgewood rear bags and have generally had good luck with them. One tall bag I had developed a severe droop on the left side. I contacted Edgewood and they replaced the bag. Great service. However, I still think that the sides of the rear tall bags are made of leather that is too thin. It was a hollow base with a thin leather filling to keep the sand in. That also bulged so the bag rocked on the bench. I mentioned this to Edgewood. Never got a reply so I switched to Protektor bags that are built like a bank vault.

All in all, I love Edgewood products except the rear bags.

It depends on how firm you like it. I like to have a little flexibility to my bags so filling the ears with a little less sand works for me while others may prefer a firmer foundation. I use Zircon sand which is heavier. I would say 10 pounds should be enough. By the way light recoil and heavy recoil are other concerns to factor in.

I filled my bags with sand and they were so heavy I looked for a lighter solution. I went with plastic beads and like the weight a lot better. I filled it about 7/8 and have slowly been adding beads until there is just a little room left to squish.

I'm sure that will work, but to anyone shooting IBS score or group, bags must be filled with sand, including zircon sand(heavy sand). The only practical way to reduce weight is to reduce the size of the bag, regardless of which sand you use.

Went looking for "heavy sand" and all I can find is the sand blasting media Black Beauty. Is this what it really is. If it is a 50lb. bag is $13 bucks at Tractor Supply for the fine stuff.
Also is it a legal fill for IBS shooting?

I’ve never had any problem using it, although not quite as heavy and puts out kind of a nasty dust while loading the bag.

If I told you. you would be surprised. Me, I just buy the scrap jewelry. One guy found some platinum in S S central CT. & parts to the east of there.

Not to get this to far off track if you found anything of value in any of the area rivers, and you know which ones because you lived in town when you were younger,they would say you planted it.
I remember when these streams were a different color every other day, from yellows to blue, green, red and combinations of them all. Now they say you can eat the fish out of them. Not Me no way no how. Not even if you are smoking it or bbq it, not happening.
Now back on topic, I went through the IBS rule book and as long as there is no shot or any metal it is legal.

Yes, heavy sand so called is zirconium silicate to the best of my knowledge and it is specifically ok by the rules for IBS shooting. I.m not sure if that is what black beauty sandblasting sand is. I think BB is a calcium iron sand.

Or take it from a bag not being used.

Get good dry sand, unlike me. I got sand from the kids’ sand box. It was damp. I put it in the oven and quickly realized that the cat had used the sand box as his personal sand box. Stunk the house up. Wife was displeased.

Protector sold me some heavy sand at a reasonable price. I’ve noticed two types of HS ‘ chromite or zircon, my understanding is that one is slightly heavier than the other but that unconfirmed.

Didn't know that as I don't shoot in any competition. I was just looking for something that had some weight without being too heavy.
