Filling the rear bag!

Hi

Im filling my rear bag... and I would like to know what people are using.

I have heard from putting lead shot in the bottom first for extra weight, to adding talc, to adding two different types of sand ie. two different coarse.

Sand blasters sand, plasters sands, brickies sand, pet shop sand and thre list goes on.. Whats the best?

So, everyone what are you filling them with!

The sand I used in my bags was purchased from Lowe's in a 50lb bag. I think it is called "Play Sand"? It may not be the best in the world but it was cheap and works well for me. A fellow shooting buddy uses straight shot in his bags. If you're going to use the bags in BR competition, then the shot may not be legal to use.

Good shooting to ya,

Rick

Ackley Improved--where are you?

If this is for shooting off the bench, you want it as heavy as possible.

materials OTHER THAN SAND are sometimes "illegal" in some organizations,IBS IIRC) i.e. lead shot

Zircon "heavy sand" is the best and is the most dense sand i have found--usually costs a little more than 1$/pound from places like R.W.Hart, www.rwhart.com )

it looks like "PLay Sand" but is several time more dense

Also, i have experimented with "Riverbed Sand" from Exo-Terra. It is available at petstores that have reptiles.

It is ALMOST as dense as zircon, but not quite,36gn/ml v 42gn/ml) but i got it for 1$/lb and didnt have to pay to ship it ;)

Ackley,

I use heavy sand from Sinclairs. Flat $6.75 shipping no matter how much stuff you buy. Buy the Forester sand funnel from them also it is the greatest thing since sliced bread for filling sand bags!

Hi

I am from Australia... and are having trouble getting my hands on zircon sand......

Any Aussies out there with a secret to the zircon stash???

And you are right.. lead shot would be illegal in competition... it can only be filled with sand!

I realize everybody isn't using sand the way I am, but is it dusty after it has been sittin around a while? I sewed up some sandbags that look like small pillows, about 14X8" maybe 3" thick and anytime I move them it is terribly dusty. Does the other types of sand not create as much dust? I got the home depot play sand.

AI--called "Riverbed Sand" by exo-terra ask for it BY NAME

if you handle several types, you can see which is the most dense

yes, it is red/clay and black colored.

just stick to the correct name and you'll be fine.

Thanks I might go looking for it. I found reptile sand... can only buy it by the 10kg!! Thats a lot of sand... and I dont have any reptiles!!! Might have to get one to use the extra sand! It is really fine... red in colour. This is the stuff. Also, Im in Australia, so what you have there by name..... we might not have it, or it maybe called different!

I got some brickies sand, brick layers) and washed it. It is fine sand just like a nice beach, faune in colour! This is no good right?? It would nearbe fine as the reptile sand, but the density is not likely as heavy!

Go get the red reptile sand???

Hi

I could not find that brand of sand anywhere here in Australia! What I did end up using is sand blasting sand. The red/pink colour. It is fine and has good weight about it.

Before I put it in the bag, I washed it and sifted it. The best way I could get any impuritues out was to put the sand in a round bucket and swirl it around. Doing this made all the stuff I needed to remove come to the surface and sit in the centre!

When I have finished filling it, I will weight it, and post the result on here so that we can compare sand weight with others! Then I will have a rough estimate of my sand density.

The heavy sand is just fine ...only problem """It's HEAVY""" ha ha ...I don't use it ...I'm disabled and can hardly carry the gun around ..let alond a sand bag that weighs 20+ lbs+ cast iron front rest..There are a lot more things that are more important than heavy bags...I just use sand from the ocean beaches...it can be had for free and it has NO dust in it...you can load em to .1gr and spin em to .001" and make the bags weigh a ton,,,but just miss one lil' flag and she all goes out the window!! I'm told that here in New Zealand we can get zircon sand from foundry casting suppliers, have a talk with your local foundry about it

Ive used heavy sand from Sinclair international mixed, about 15yrs ago and have no complaints.
Its heavy as can
I used baby powder, talc was pulled from the US and Canadian market as it causes cancer.
From my understanding. And i couldnt find any anywhere i looked at the time

, i dont even know if Sinclair international is still in buisness anymore.

Red Garnet sand is preferrred
I used to gold pan so had loads of heavy black sand
Garnet sand is just as heavy
-------------------------------------
So I decided to fill with black sand and save some bucks
They do not squeeze very well with black sand
Garnet sand is round little pebbles so will squeeze and conform better but still be heav
-------------------------------------
You can get 25 lbs for like $35 off Ebay as blasting media
