Federal Primers -- Opinions?

Being a mostly lowly handgun shooter and having reloaded the odd dump truck load or two for said handguns, given a choice (i.e. plenty of primers) I will use Federal primers every time. The driving factor here is that the cup is softer. They will seat much easier and consistently in progressive loaders and ignite in guns with less than a robust hammer strike. Works for me.

I tried 6 different primers in my 6 dasher and nothing proved more accurate and had lower SDs than CCI 450’s (small rifle magnum). Hard to find but worth the wait.

I have had good results with the CCI 450 M in my 6BRX. However, today I tried some regular 400 SRP and shot a good group with the 115 Berger VLD. I plan to do more testing with the 400 s soon.

210s, GM or regular, work great in the 300 WSM for LR BR. I'll also start with them in my 300 SAUM IMP. Weight sorted of course.

I've wondered the same.
If I owned the brands, I sure would want standardization for cost and production efficiency.
That said, if you include primers made outside of the US, there are still a bunch of non Vista Outdoors made primers.

Most times, the powder used determines what primer it likes. Seems certain powders like certain primers. As far as SD or ES numbers go, it is not always what shoots best. I have seen low numbers shoot big vertical at 1000 yards and higher numbers shoot small. I always let the target tell me what it wants. Matt

If you are weight sorting them, why not keep them as small as the scale will allow. You can always mix a 5.48 grain with a 5.49 when you load. I always put them back in a primer box with the weight written on them. Matt

I believe they distribute a lot of brands, but are they the manufacturer?

They are made in different facilities with different components, so you should expect differences other than the box.

Yes today, but as corporate intertwines the Manufactoring process.. Can we expect them all be the same at some point in the near future. If you ever worked at a manufactor that buys another factory the first thing they do after adjusting head count, is to standardize the best process over the entire industry.

Why would we expect that? CCI and Federal have been different for years. Why expect Remington primers to change?

.05 grain increments. I don't remember the exact numbers, but it something like.....

Smalls:
3.6 to 3.65
3.65 to 3.7
3.7 to 3.75
3.75 to 3.8

Larges:
5.50-5.55
5.55-5.6
5.6-5.65

I change the scale over to grams and then sort them by individual number. 239, 240, 241 etc.

Primers aren't Lawn mowers . The reason that the manufacturers have made different primers is to market each item to a different requirement of the shooters needs . How many models of car does Ford , or Chrysler make ? Each brand of primer , and varying types of primer are made by each Company using proprietary formulas . To become "Standard" for any reason , would be commercial suicide .
