Fclass Advice

All you experienced Fclass shooters out there. Is adjustable buttplate a *must* or a convenience? I have never shot one or really even seen one up close and in person.

Adjustable anything is a good thing. It certainly is no where even close to a must, just look on the line at any F-Class shoot, many, many more rifles without them then with them.

For me its not a must but it really help in the comfort department. The way the stock with out it rested on my shoulder it would get soar and start to hurt after about 50 shots. That problem has been eliminated with the use of the adjustable butt. So not necessary but in my case it was a good investment.

If the stock fits you and you are comfortable with the position then you are all set...but if you are shooting a hard recoiling round and shoot with a "loose" hold, you will certainly want the buttpad nicely into your shoulder at optimum eye relief on the scope. That may most easily be obtained with an adjustable buttplate. Saves having to keep monkeying with the scope position on the rifle.

They may make it more comfortable for you depending on your style, but it's absolutely not necessary. Neither is an adjustable cheek piece.
I do not use either one.

The length between the butt and the trigger is what you want to look at when looking for the right fit. Once you have that measurement the need for adjustable doesn't serve a purpose. Some tilt the butt for additional comfort but that hasn't been necessary for me.

It adds weight to the rear of the stock. That improves balance = a good thing.
Most stock blanks are 34". No way to get a longer forend with just a butt plate. The adjustment system adds at least 1" and can be extended to 3". That lets you move the front rest out and again better balance between the bags.

On my Mcmillian tooley MBR , I have never felt anything but comfort. If you want to spend some extra bucks you can. I think that in the end champions are made in the loading room and on practice days ( a lot of practice days ! )
Some advantages are purchased, some are learned.

Nothing adjustable on mine. I specked out a half inch longer on my LOP, and got the decelerator which is not needed on a 21 pound 6 XC

I have adjustable cheekpieces and buttplates on two of my F-Open rigs, and another that's being built.

I got them because I figured I might want to try them some day, but haven't yet done so.

I might think different if I had a heavy recoiling rifle or was shooting F-T/R.

well I think I will need an adjustable cheek piece, as my current stock and ring/scope combo my natural cheek weld was too low. Had to add a Karsten cheek rest and now it is comfortable and proper eye relief. Not sure about the "better" stocks. Shehane told me his stocks(most of the buyers) don't need the cheek rest added. But who knows. Just hate to buy one, then get it, then realize I need it, then ship it back, then wait a few weeks or more, then have to wait on return shipping. But that may be what needs to happen in the end

Do you shoot F-Open or F-TR?

FTR but the next rifle I am going to try to do a switch barrel for a 308 and a 6mm. Shoot 6mm in F open and 308 in FTR

But mostly FTR until I learn more about reading condition and shooting technique

I use a cheek piece in F-TR along with a pretty firm hold. My F-Open rifle with Manners F-Class stock has a cheek piece but I don't use it with .284 Shehane. I do in .300 WSM. This is a very individual choice. I've seen shooters do well either way. Certainly, David Bailey can make a pretty good case for not using one. ;)
