Favorite Gun Stock Oil?

The guy I have had my stock work done by for years, uses Pilkington's from Brownells. Not sure which one it is he uses though:

Arrow wood oil...
Preacher turned me on to Arrow wood oil. He’s right. I used it once and found it to be the best I’ve ever used. I bought the big bottle and use it on every stock I make!
Don’t forget to shake, shake shake the bottle while you use it!

I've used Tru-Oil for many years, I was in the Cooper factory, just a few years ago, and that's what they use. They use Lemon oil or Tung oil in the checkering, True-Oil would fill it in. I've used spar varnish with white gas and Japan drier, that finishes like the finish on 1960s Browning, also had a Superposed finished by a well known stockman in the Seattle area, he used Fuller Plastisan, a two part floor finish. I don't think it would dent with a hammer blow. But I think the Tru-OIl and tung or lemon oil in the checkering are the easiest for most people to use. Lots of thin coats hand rubbed, Tru-oil also makes a finishing wax, or I've used Watco Satin Wax. Don't be in a hurry, you'll have a stock with bragging rights.

So on a nice stock that is losing its shine ,how do you apply this ?

I would do a lite sanding with 600 grit, then apply the oil. Application is easy. Shake the bottle really well, put a little on your finger to spread it around, then rub it in with your palm. One coat takes about 10 minutes.

I’ve found that stock finish is like gun oil. You keep trying them till you find something you like, then have multiple containers of the has beens hanging around till reckoning
(shop cleanup) day, lol. I’ve used Pro Custom Oil for many years with excellent results, but may have to try some Arrow.

When talking about oil for a finished stock to protect the wood , Ballistol. If you looked at old military stocks , oil blackened and softened the wood , Ballistol won't soften or damage. Wax is also good . Raw wood is different , I would sand then dampen the wood to open up the pores then fine sand , stain and lacquer finish. Some used Linseed oil finished with a wax covering when dry

True Oil for the average home job. If you don't want that much gloss, don't keep adding coats and buffing.
