Favorite Gun Stock Oil?

Boiled linseed oil was the preferred process for military rifles until it was replaced in the 1920's with Tung oil based finishes which was better at preventing moisture penetration. Today's popular finishes are even better at that. True Oil is a mixture of oils, driers, and varnish that soaks into the wood, dries and hardens to seal against moisture.

The advantage of an oil finish, or one that soaks into the wood rather than a sitting on top of the wood like a varnish, is that repairs to the finish are more easily made transparent to the eye. You can steam out a dent and rub on an oil finish until you get the shine that matches the rest of the stock, making the repair invisible.

Wax or finish? B/C Tru Oil Stock finish will get the job done. Apply it with your finger tips and rub it in. Wipe off the excess. ;)
Yup. Just don't try to do the whole project in one step. I always apply as thin a coat as possible in small amounts, rub it on by hand (rub hard enough that you feel friction heat on your hands), let thoroughly dry and buff it down with 0000 steel wool. Then I repeat the entire process (multiple times) until all pores are filled perfectly and finish off with a brisk workout with a soft towel to buff it to a shine. Done right, you can get a finish nearly as shiny as the gloss poly coatings and less likely to chip. Be sure to go a little heavy on 'end grain' areas such as butt-plate areas and such to get a good moisture seal. Minor scratch repairs are a breeze.

Question to OP: What kind of finish do you want? Classic English, Military? Filled or unfilled grain? What application is the firearm being used for? All factors in the finish choice.

The link in post 11 is where I ordered from. I have a Beretta Silver Pigeon which I applied around 25 coats of linseed oil and it continued to only soak into the grain. A couple of coats of Arrow on top of the oil, which the directions state is fine, and the grain finally sealed!
Thats what i want to put it on
