Not since the 70's...Anyone familiar with a .17 Firebowl? I saw an ad for one on gunbroker.![]()
Hey Don,
I sure enjoy seeing your caliber family photos! Thanks for posting!!
Don't see a .17Predator case in that pic?!?...As for 'favorite' 17', the .17Predator is mine. Not as easy to make as a .17-204, for the same/more horsepower, but it allows a certain 'cool factor' for the effort...Speaking of which, a friend of mine...wound up with a demon on his hands! Got a 30gr GOLD up over 4500fps!!!...he named it the .17WCH "western coyote hunter"!...Fun topic! Everyone does need a cool little seventeen...
I think I've run into the 17 wildcat I'm going to pursue. The 17-220 Russian... What ya think?
Some more to make your head spin a little, since you mentioned the 220 Russian parent. Here are a few more with Russian and BR parents along with the Mach IV for comparison:

Third from left is basically the 17-220 Russian you're considering. Fourth from the left is a 17PPC. And the 17LN (Little Nasty) is a PPC short .180". 17 Athena is a short .235" BR.

Steve, now that Montana Mize is making 30 Texas Golds on Todds die set,it is the perfect time to build a big 17.He has jackets and lead wire and they weigh exactly 30.0 grns.Been thinking about a 17-204Always wanted a bigger 17 than the 17Rem. just never built one. Too many other projects came and went it seems. Love my 17 FB XP-100 pistol, and it was responsible for the demise of a bunch of furbearers over the years. Loved it mostly due to it's weight/portability as I can easily carry it many miles on the ranches I hunt. Couple of long shots it had to it's credit was a 500-yardish crow. A 350ish yard bobcat using a calcd. system with the 2.5 MOA plex reticle post tips for elevation/windage reference in the 2.5-8X Leupold pistol scope. Killed a 300ish-yd. coyote once using it, and my windage dope called for something like 1.2 plex post tip units. Was quite disconcerting aiming that far off for wind but it worked as calcd. One of my all-time favorite shots. 400-500 yd. prairie dogs was a kick too with it using the 6-18X Nikon Buckmasters mil-dot reticle recalcd. for subtensions at 18X.
Wow kriebles that is an amazing collection of 17's. Do you mind telling us your favorite?...
Might start thinking about it Matt. Actually like to shoot that 17-204/30 grainers in an AR.Steve, now that Montana Mize is making 30 Texas Golds on Todds die set,it is the perfect time to build a big 17.He has jackets and lead wire and they weigh exactly 30.0 grns.Been thinking about a 17-204...maybe.
Matt
I believe that's the same thing as a 17 ppcI agree!
I tend to shoot past 300Y a lot so the smallest 17's, like the 17AH don't work for me so well. Man, if I lived near a place that had those potguts or those small squirrels by the alfalfa fields it'd be totally different!!!
So I guess 17R since I've had three. But if I had to start from scratch and pick one it'd probably be a 17 fireball. That's just a great case size in 17 or 20.
I've got a brand new 17-6.5G reamer, form dies, and barrel, if someone reading this wants 25's going an estimated 4400 fps.
