Favorite 17cal cartridge?

What's your favorite 17cal? I have a hornet and love it! Infact I'm wanting another 17 with just a bit more poop to it. I was thinking the new 22tcm would be fun to wildcat to a 17. Maybe add a 40deg shoulder while your at it?

.17 Remington. Love both of mine (Remington 700s). Accurate and light for field use. Trajectory like a stretched string out to 300 yards. If I was looking for a new .17 I might look at the .17 Fireball, the little brother to the Remington.

Currently .17 Fireball, but i did have a .17 AH in the past that was quite the over achiever.......

That little guy fought WAYYYY over his weight class.....

I have 17AH and 17-223. The hornet is just a fun little round. No recoil, no blast, accurate, and does a number on ground squirrels.
I was thinking of adding a 17 FB or 17MachIV

Been seriously considering having my CZ 527 Varmint 17 Rem re-chambered to 17-222. They're nearly identical with the exception of being able to use 222 Lapua brass which is a big bonus compared to the 17 Rem brass that's available.

I have another CZ 527 Varmint but it's in 17 Hornet and that little bugger is always a lot of fun to shoot and they are crazy quiet shooting them suppressed.

I think a suppressor is in my future! How much over can a suppressor be and still be effective? Will a .243 suppressor be ok for a 17 so I can use it on more than one gun?

I would'nt bother with suppressor on either 17 or 20 cal rifles. I have several of both and accuracy has suffered greatly. 17 Mach IV, 20 Practical, 20 BR, and 20-250 all one hole rifles turn into 3/4 moa and worse with suppressors on. Doesn't matter the suppressor 223 or 30 cal cans. It's still fun and if you don't mind a some loss of accuracy they are more fun to shoot suppressed. Scott

17FB is an amazing overachiever. Side by side I even think it outperforms the 20VT. Brass is hard to come by and factory ammo is even more rare. The FB may as well be a wildcat.

If you are saying that you have a well tuned load that shoots one hole groups and you added a suppressor and it no longer shoots, what did you expect? You have to work your load with the suppressor on. I use suppressors on everything I have and they shoot just as good as before I had suppressors. My opinion on suppressors is I pretty much wont shoot without one anymore.

I shoot everything suppressed, from 22LR to 338 Lap Imp and I've never had a single issue with any of my suppressors affecting group size. POI, yes, but group size, never. Maybe some lesser quality cans affect grouping but my TBAC and SAS suppressors are top quality and they only compliment my shooting.

Also, I've never had to change or tune a load with a suppressor on, versus off.

I shoot my CZ 527 Varmint 204 suppressed as well and like my 17 Hornet, you don't have to work very hard to shoot 1/2 inch groups.IMG_1056.jpg 17HH.png

All my cans are TBAC. 1/2 moa is far from accurate in 17 and 20 cal rifles. They should shoot in the .1 to .2's easily. Every other rifle I have shows no change in accuracy except these three. My nephew has the same issue, only the 20 BR he shoots. I still shoot them suppressed when prairie dogging, but when shooting groups or fly shoots no can. Good luck. Hopefully your rifles shoot. Scott

If you are, easily, shoot .1's - .2's, a tip of the hat to you because if you're doing that on a regular basis, that is some exceptional shooting!

Yes. I work up the loads with the can on, not off. I shoot everything suppressed. Common sense rules here. Develop the load on how you plan on shooting. The only thing I stated was not everyone gun likes to be suppressed. When you own 80 or more rifles you will find a few that don't follow the group. There are exceptions, maybe not with yours. I don't have a issue with it.

Love my 17 Predator, but there are so many great choices. Its too tough to choose,I have had a ton of fun with my 17Mach 1V.The 17 Ackley Bee and 17 He Bee are fun to shoot, but I havent got as much trigger time with them as the ole Mach 1V.The 17 PPC'S reach way out,I guess it depends what you want to do with it.The 17s are addicting.Since you already have the Hornet covered I would build a no neck turn 17 Mach 1V for Lapua brass with a 9 twist barrel to shoot 25 V-Maxs.

I agree!

I tend to shoot past 300Y a lot so the smallest 17's, like the 17AH don't work for me so well. Man, if I lived near a place that had those potguts or those small squirrels by the alfalfa fields it'd be totally different!!!

So I guess 17R since I've had three. But if I had to start from scratch and pick one it'd probably be a 17 fireball. That's just a great case size in 17 or 20.

I've got a brand new 17-6.5G reamer, form dies, and barrel, if someone reading this wants 25's going an estimated 4400 fps.

.17 Ackley Bee for the 20 gr. V-Max and the .17 Fireball for the 25 gr. V-Max. Love them both and the both have their places. I have a Ackley Hornet also but the Bee brass is thicker and easier to work with. You could darn near anneal Hornet brass with a bic lighter...
