Favorite 17cal cartridge?

I've been looking at a 17 or 19 badger. Looks like a fun round, plus all I'd have to do is rebarrel my Ruger 17/22 as the rim diam is the same as the hornet.

I agree!

I tend to shoot past 300Y a lot so the smallest 17's, like the 17AH don't work for me so well. Man, if I lived near a place that had those potguts or those small squirrels by the alfalfa fields it'd be totally different!!!

So I guess 17R since I've had three. But if I had to start from scratch and pick one it'd probably be a 17 fireball. That's just a great case size in 17 or 20.

I've got a brand new 17-6.5G reamer, form dies, and barrel, if someone reading this wants 25's going an estimated 4400 fps.

My very first search was for a 17-6.5 Grendel to see if anyone had built one. I'm pretty sure I ran on to your post on another forum. I really wish I had the funds as that would be an awesome project!

I agree on that 17-6.5G project! That should be a dandy and can't wait to see how that one turns out.

I've got a 17 Rem that I REALLY like for chucks, crows, and coyotes. And have been impressed with the 17 M4's that fellow hunters have. If I was to do another 17 and I didn't have a BUNCH of 17 Rem brass laying around, I'd look hard and long at the 17 PPC since I have a steady supply of fired PPC brass. WD

I got all fired up from hanging out on a small caliber forum, lol. Then found a deal on a CZ527 in 17R. Then all the 17-6.5G AI showed up months later, the action I planned to use fell through, and I put it all on hold. Now here I am years later.

If I don't end up selling that stuff it'll be when I retire before I try it, which will be years.

Very nice! Does the Gopher have a hemi shoulder also?

Funny thing is I've been looking at doing a 6mm/35 SMc. I've been reading that even if the hemi shoulder doesn't gain performance it makes brass last much longer.

The 17 Gopher is a die-formed case. Once fired, it would have a 40° shoulder.

I really like the look of that 17Marmot.Thanks for posting the visual aid Don.Whos little wildcat is that,do tell.:)

Do you know the powder capacity of each of those cases?

I used to shoot the 17 Boomer (second from left in photo below). Fire-form loads using 9.86 gr. of WW296 with 20gr. V-Maxes yielded 3,654 fps. Eventual performance yielded 3,725 fps with only 10.04 gr. of powder! It is an extremely efficient cartridge, and I love its 40° shoulder & long neck. I'm currently working on a project, the 17 Boomer Mag. (die-formed case in the center of photo between the Gopher and Marmot). It will have a 40° shoulder.

There's a .160" difference between the 17 Gopher and 17 Marmot in case body length. According to the wildcat designer, the Marmot would shoot the 25gr. V-Maxes at 3,750 fps. He has a 17 Javelina Imp. reamer that he has his gunsmith run in short at specific distances to create the Boomer, Boomer Mag., Gopher, and Marmot cases.

17 Mach IV with 30gr Kindler Golds at 3800fps is very accurate and bad news for what it hits. A real pleasure to shoot
The 17 Mach1V is an awesome round.Honestly it is about perfect for any good 17caliber bullet, but these variations do intrique me.
