faster twist 22-250

I used several 1-9tw Bartleins & Kriegers chambered in 22-250AI for guys around here a few years ago. One of them was shooting the Hornady 75 AMax at just over 3400fps out of his. When the throat got a little rough, RL22 was blowing them up, so he switched to RL17, got the same velocity, but the bullets stopped blowing up. Both those powders are hard on throats, but I saw a comparison of the pressure curves of both, and RL17 had a much more gradual curve approaching max pressure, while RL22's 'curve' was much faster rise to peak pressure.

The 75's will probably shoot fine for you but with that 9tw they'll probably be at a reduced BC. The Sierra 69gr TMK would probably make for a slick bullet choice at full BC.
B23 nailed it!
In my experience the 75A-max is very iffy in a 9twt at my elevation. But the 69 MK, TMK and Berger 70’s are solid performers. Obviously if the 75’s aren’t stable, then the BC is only a paper number...and a serious miss at any significant distance.
Maybe ask me how I know....

Go by what the bullet maker declares for a standard atmosphere (like Std.Metro, or ICAO).
If the bullet maker doesn't declare, doesn't know, then don't use their bullets.

if you are not hunting in a deep freeze, AA2700 will dramatically increase your barrel life vs R#15.

Check the heat index chart for powders.

I am running a 22/243 AI with a 14 twist shooting the 60g Sierra at 4000, throat wear is very minimal, and we found this to be true when running 22/250, AI, 243, AI. 4064 and R#15 eats barrel throats in high volume shooting.

The Heat Index chart is a real eye opener as to barrel wear and powder choices.

If you could beg some 60g Sierra tipped match kings from someone, you would be very very happy in a 9T, 22/250.

My 9T shilen would not stabilize the 75g A max.

I recently acquired an almost new 9TW 22-250. What is an appropriate weight bullet to start with?
(Varmint/target types) I have no experience with this twist---I always have shot 50-55 grns through 12 and 14 twists...
I have looked and think around 75 grns??? Thanks in advance, marc

Howdy !

The newest Hornady catalogue does not list a .224" calibre 75"A"-Max.

For .224" cal, they do list both a 73gr and a 75gr " ELD-M.

I used the 75"A"-Max w/ my " .22-35 Remington " wildcat, shot from a 28" SS 1-8 K & P; for use on groundhogs. Have not tried the two ELD-Ms listed above, for the same use. But, they'd be the Hornady product I would try, to supplant the 75 "A"-Max.
