faster twist 22-250

okie

Silver $$ Contributor
I recently acquired an almost new 9TW 22-250. What is an appropriate weight bullet to start with?
(Varmint/target types) I have no experience with this twist---I always have shot 50-55 grns through 12 and 14 twists...
I have looked and think around 75 grns??? Thanks in advance, marc

I also have a 1-9" .22-250. So far, I've shot 75 berger vlds, but am going to give 75 amax a try next. Mine has a long throat, and R15 has given pretty impressive velocities

The 75's will probably shoot fine for you but with that 9tw they'll probably be at a reduced BC. The Sierra 69gr TMK would probably make for a slick bullet choice at full BC.
what powder for the 69's?

When my current, 1-14 Twist, 22-250 Rem 700, gives up, the Ghost,..
I'll go with, the Ackley Version ( I HATE,.. Trimming ! ) and a 1-9 Twist, to shoot,.. the 60 gr. NBT's, 65 GK's,
69 MK's, 73 gr. Bergers and 75 gr. BTHP Hornadys,.. Surely, a couple of those, will "Shoot",.. outstanding !
And,. I have, a 6 XC for anything that, I need MORE,.. Range / killing power, for.

The 9 twist 22-250 I had shot 77SMK ahead of H4350 very nicely.
I know the box clearly states 1:8 or faster but I called Sierra and the guy told me the 77SMK was really made to work in a 9 twist.

B23 is correct with the 75 vs 69s. While the stability calculator may not be a perfect tool for deciding if "your" barrel will optimally stabilize a bullet, I believe the 9 twist is ideal for the 69smk as I use them in a 9 T .224 barrel at 800' asl. In higher elevations (above 4500') the 9 twist will work well with 75s. It's always better to chose the proper twist rather than use elevation for your gauge. An 8 twist is probably IMO the best twist for a 22-250. Getting down into a 7 twist often causes bullet failure. The 8 twist will not cause that issue unless using extremely light thin jacketed bullets.
