FAst twist .22 walking varminter?

If you all were going to build a .22 cal fast twist walking varmint rifle ( 9 lb or less ) what would be your choice of chamberings?

having one built right now for coyotes, 22-243 middlested, bat machine right bolt left port repeater, mcmillan A3 sporter, lilja navy taper 1-8 twist spiral fluted by kampfeld customs a jewel trigger wyatts DBM 20 moa picatinny 3.5-15 nightforce nxs mil-mil in arctic camo. intend on shooting the 80g amax or vld at around 3450+. should be done in december will post pics upon completion. ps relatively short barrel life so not the best application for prairie dogs.

.300 -
Howdy !

Well, if it was ME......

I'd probably chamber in my wildcat .22-35 ( .35 Rem necked-down to .224: calibre ).
More punch than a .22-250, less case taper than the .22-250 or the .220 Swift; and no goofy rim like the Swift has. Works w/ a standard .308 bolt face ( my rifle also has an M-16 extractor )

You didn't mention your quarry.
A 24" .22-35 1-14 was good for a clean kill on a groundhog @ 500.

In a 28" 1-8, there was/is enough oomph to put 3,500fps on a 75gr "A"-Max, when using the most accurate powder ( for my rifle/loads ).

Together, I used both of the above to good effect, on live varmint and the occasional paper shoot; for over 25yr.

A 24" 1-12 shooting something like Sierra 65SPBTs, would offer great capability, in a walk-around type
rifle application. A 1-8 would also be a viable alternative, in my view.

But hey, that's all JMHO.

With regards,

Nothing wrong with a 22-250 Ackley, 75 VLD's at 3425.......

Or a 223 Ackley in different clothes, my 22-204, 75 VLD's at 3075.......

I've had great luck with a couple of 22 Dashers in 14 twist, but now shoot a 6 Dasher....... which appears to work as well.......

Thanks.

I could, but I'd really hate to deny you the satisfaction......... ;D

Soon as I get the last piece of the puzzle, I'll have me another walkin' 22-204...... ;)

I built a "Super Duece" - ran my 223 AI reamer deep in a Shilen light varmint/heavy sporter 1:8 twist stainless sporter rifle. Use 204 Ruger brass necked up to 223, fireformed....and now have a rifle that thumps 80 gr AMax at 3100 fps. Accurate to 1K (never shot further) with ease. Cheap brass, use 223 AI dies, and RL15 for heavy bullets.

My standard 22-250 runs the 75 A Max at 3350 from a 22" Hart. 25 minutes of elevation to 1000 yards. Feeds from a 10 shot HS precision mag/bottom metal 100%. tough to beat. My other 22-250 is a stock remmy 700 barrel running the 40 grain NBT at 4150. Jackrabbits look like they jumped on a hand grenade. Coyotes are DRT.

You are a hard man Alf. A hard man. So what's satisfaction anyway? I've been denied other things thus far. Good looks, brains, money, why noy add satisfaction to the list?

I like my rem 700 lv sf with 22 in. barrel in 221 fireball. shoots 40gr v-maxes around 3150fps and i get half inch groups. low recoil and muzzle blast also. able to hit whistle pigs (like a small prairie dog) out to 400 yards pretty consistently. don't know what you are using it for though. let us know what you decide. I would like to know. oh yeah! Mine weighs a tad under 8 pounds with scope, sling and bipod.

Will do. Sounds like you have a real sweetie there in that 221. I considered one of those LVSF when they hit the market. Snazzy little rifles for sure. But, the price went through the roof so fast I just couldn't put it all together at the time. Maybe I'll run across a nice used LVSF sometime. In all honesty there isn't much you can't do with the usual .22 fodder. I've killed all sorts of critters with 52gr to 55gr bullets. I've just had a hankering for a lighter weight .22,like the LVSF for instance, that will stabilize the 70 to 80gr bullets. I guess as I get older the 12lb varminters are loosing their appeal.
A couple years ago I bought a M700 Stainless Mountain rifle at Gander Mountain. They were called Gander Guide Rifles. It was a store close-out and the nicest little rifle I've owned yet to be exact. There were 2 of them in the rack. A 243 and a 308. I was thinking of a new calling rifle,so I opted for the 243. I should have found some way to get them both. I've regretted it ever since. All I did to the thing was romove about half the pressure on the barrel at the "nubs" at the end of the stock and sight her in. My daughter fell into the rifle at that point and has taken to it quite well. A month or so ago I decided to take it out and use up some leftover handloaded 75gr V-Max I had loaded up for it. It has been sighted in with 95gr Noslers. I never ventured to check the zero between the 2 loads, just went groundhoggin' to free up the brass. I was 9 for 10 with that little rig,and the one questionable hog lost some hair in the deal. Never saw it again either. It either packed up and moved to Ohio,or died of it's wounds. If I ever run into a nice Gander Guide in 308 I'll be one happy camper for sure. I have a new love for these little lightweights. Great rifles.

Well, I just so happen to have the stock off one of those stainless rem mountain rifles. Its a brown laminate with stainless sling swivels. If youre interested in it, let me know via PM. You could be back into one simply by slipping a barrelled action into it.

New to this Forum. (I want to be like alf when I grow up...!)

Ray Bowman at Precision Rifle and Tool in N.C. just fitted a #2, 22-204 Brux to my SS .223 Model 7 with Jewell trigger and Lone Wolf Summit stock. It's in the brown truck, headed my way as we speak. Ray used the Pacific Tool reamer with .060" freebore. I lengthened the box mag by knocking out the factory spacer, replaced by JB welding a 1/4" thick piece of aluminum. I'll re-bed the barreled action and start load development. I'm going with proven .223AI loads and think I can reproduce that performance with less pressure. It may even out perform the .223AI. The Brux is 7.5 twist for heavier bullets.

I'll report my findings, groups, chrono results, etc.

Ray Bowman also rechambered a med heavy .222 Hart bbl on a Rem 722 that had a chamber issue. He set the Hart back and used the same Pacific Tool .22-204 chamber on this one. This gun is a 12 twist, so now I have two .22-204's, one a light weight 7.5 twist and the other, a med heavy 12 twist. So, I'll be working up loads for light and for heavier bullets. Should be interesting.
