Fast Twist 22-250 vs 223

Hey all,

I've been pondering the pros and cons of a fast twist 22-250 (thinking 75grn bullet range) in a bolt gun vs. a 223 in an AR. I like the ballistics of the 22-250 better obviously but the AR handles better and offers a follow-up shot advantage.

I'm in WY where 400+ yards is a normal shot on coyotes and the wind is always a factor.

Any thoughts on these two options?

Thanks all and God bless,

Adam

Have you ever considered a 243? Sounds like it might be ideal for your purposes of pushing a heavier bullet at long distances in windy conditions.

With that distance and wind i would choose the 22-250...If your going to be rebarreling i would really look at the 22-250AI if you are wanting to go with the heavier bullets...I have used a 22-250AI 1:9 with the 75 A-Max at about 3350fps..a great combination...Currently I use a 223 but my shots are often 200yrds. and less with wind not being a factor.

Also since you are already set up for 22-250 shooting an ackley will be easy..you can always shoot standard carts. till you get you some ackley dies later.

I have considered the 243 but am already set up for 223 and 22-250 reloading and was wanting to stick with 22 caliber. . .

In that case (no pun intended) I'd definitely go with the 22 250 for the conditions you described. While the 223 is one of my favorite varmint calibers, it can't match the long range performance of the 22 250. Especially now with the new line of long range bullets for faster twist rates.

Right, I definitely agree on the performance difference between the two rounds. Does the handling of the AR though get any points here though?

If money were no issue I'd just buy a 223 WSSM upper and call it perfect!

From Left: 223 55gr. V-Max, 22-250AI 75gr. A-Max, 22-250 55gr. V-Max.

All three are great rounds...And all have their purpose

Not to hijack but ,Lawrence,do you hunt with an ak? Or am I reading this wrong. I find it interesting that you mentioned this gun .I built a savage in 7.62x39mm and love it.I also went with the 22-250AI to overcome the brass growth issue with the 22-250.

I thought that interesting as well. I tried to figure out a way to do that but the trajectory is terrible compared to the cartridges we are discussing. . .

i have shot a 22-250 for a long time and still love it. in the last 5 or so years it has been rebarreled to a 9 then an 8 twist. the heavier bullets brought this gun into a whole nother level. shooting 70 grn bergers have easily extended it range to 700 yds on varmint. my dad shoots a 223 and like already mentioned, it can't hang.

22/250 AI, freebore for a 75 gr Hornady AMax and H4831, 8 twist works for me. Make sure the freebore is adequate...... .075 or somewhere around that for a 75-80 gr. That 75 gr amax is "Wham Bam" on expansion. Dont believe Hornady on that it is a target bullet onlyand not to be used or recommended for hunting....BS.

I am brand new to this Forum...or any other Forum for that matter...Sorry I cannot comment on your post...I am just looking for a way to get familier with how the Forum works...I just bought a Savage Axis in 22-250 w/ 12 twist...this is my first 22-250 and I would like to know what bullet weights would be the best to use in this caliber/twist...

I'd use a 50-65gr bullet in the 1/12 tw. When ever I change barrels on mine I'll get
a 1/9tw to shoot the 75gr Hornady v-max.

I have several 223.'s and a couple 22-250's, I love them both. My father has a 22-250 with a 1-7" twist and it shoots 80 gr. Berger vld's crazy accurate. I have no experience with the 22-250 AI. Although I am interested because the 22-250 is very hard on brass.

Get a DPMS AR-15, 24" 223 with a 1-9 twist. It shoots the 34 Grain dogtowns to the 75 match.

Best varmint bullet is the 53 V-Max (windy) 290bc pushed with XMR 8208 and CCI450 primers. Mag length

2nd best is the 69's (windy) 310bc with Varget and CCI450 primers. Mag length

20 Rd magazine, 4-12 scope, is very had to beat in any varmint field.

The 22-250 with heavy bullets does not allow you to see the hit thru your scope. That's called "recoil" lol....

follow up shots are easier with a 223 AR-15.
