Fast 22 idea, has it been done?

I shot a few rounds of 22-250 Nolser brass thru my 22 Creedmoor today just to see what happened. Came out with some nice 22 Creedmoor brass.
Pictures here.

Barrel makers must love you guys. ;)

You got that right Boyd, had a 22-250 used for long range prarie dogs it was really good but barrel was cooked in 800 rounds and I was easy with it. For a predator rifle that you didn't shoot that much it would work well. No more for me

Actually there is a factory cartridge that can push 55 grain bullets over 4000 fps MV - the 223 WSSM.

Pretty much the same capacity as a 224 TTH(22 Newton truly) which is not prone to the insane pressure spikes of the WSSM

I once thought about a .20 WSSM, but that`s another story for another time...... ::)

One that hasn't been mentioned, the 22BRK. It would be very similar to the SLR but built with the same specs as the BR.

Just my 2 cents. Now im a 220 swift lover.
My 220 swift with 75gr amax will do anything that any other 22 cal can do.

IM READY FOR THE SWIFT HATERS TO CHIME IN SO GIVE IT TO ME LOL!

I wish better brass was available for the swift....

A .22 Swift AI with the 75 Amax would be on my short list.....

Phil,
I have used Winchester brass for my Swift rifles for years and have no problems with it. Brass prep might take a little longer then my Lapua 22-250 brass. You can also use Norma brass. Costs a lot more and I have more time then money so I use Win. 40X Guy uses the Norma I believe.

Brass is not the problem with the Swift that everyone seems to think.

If I did a .224" caliber I would do a 22-284 and run 80 - 90 grain bullets out of it. I'm sure it has been done, does anyone know what kind of speeds I could expect from a 26" barrel?

Erik, I played with this cartridge using QL. I plugged in the 80 grain A-Max out of the doughnut and H1000 with a 28" and 30" as that's what I would run. It said 3500 and almost 3600 w/30" but with pressures in the low 50's. It's on my short list and I have a 721 action to screw it on. As soon as I can sneak the CC from my Wife I will give Kiff a call for the reamer.

Based on water volume it's interesting that the 22-250AI is equal to a straight Swift and a SwiftAI is the same as a 22/6.5x55.
The 22/6.5x55AI is a beast and equal to the 22/284.

What does QL say for 26" barrel at full pressure (60 K)?

I think you'll have troubles getting the 90's to hold together at anything over 3400fps. I watched a 22 dasher turn them into little puff balls this summer. He was trying different combinations of barrel twists (gain twists and others) but I'm not sure what he finally nailed down.

What twist would you run, MrM? Methinks you might have a problem keeping those 80 grain AMax's from going "poof" at those velocities. A call to Hornady before you order that reamer might be prudent. Just my 2 cents.

If you're looking for extreme then I read a story somewhere that the DoD paid Roy Weatherby to see if he could get 5000FPS, if I recall correctly he did, or close to it, with something like a 22-300wbymag. (probably shoot half the barrel life zeroing a scope.)

I bet a 35 would hit 5K out of the 22/284.

Playing with QL the best chance would be something along the lines of an '06 AI or greater.

Somewhere approaching 5K you start running into the limit of the gasses rate of expansion. That's why the high velocity experiments by the Navy and the AF have used magneto rail guns and light high pressure gasses.

Brood over this. 22-284
