Factory Bullets for 22-250 w/12 twist

I have just purchased a Savage Axis 22-250 w/ 12 twist...what factory bullets or bullets weights are the most accurate to use in this rifle? Any info you have would be helpful as this is my first 22-250

Nothing over 60 grains with a 12 twist. You will have to try them first.I have the best luck with 50-53 grain bullets.

For a 22-250 1-12 twist the 60's shoot the best, my savage 1-12 shoots the 69's

Factory 55-60's would be your best bet.

Handloaded 60 V-Max with Varget is my PD/Coyote load. The 12 twist takes advantage of the longer shank.

It only shoots the 69's at 4000+ elevation though. Somebody can chime in but it is borderline for the 1-12.

Another good bullet is the long for weight 53 V-Max, it's long and the 1-12 twist 22-250 is perfect for it.

Good bullet out to 400 yards easily.

Good luck,

If by factory you mean NOT handloading, then depends on three things...your budget, your gun's likes, and your intended use.

For varmints, Hornady 55gr V-max is almost universally liked in most rifles. Great balance of velocity and BC. Sometimes, a rifle likes the Winchester white box, 45gr JHP. Makes a wicked loud "whop" when it hits a furry little creature! But, my rifles are 50-50 if they like it. Nosler's 55gr is mouth-droppingly accurate, and as effective as the V-max.

Winchester - inexpensive, effective. Great for prairie dogs, crows, anything under 300 yards. http://www.midwayusa.com/product/2900212889/winchester-usa-ammunition-22-250-remington-45-grain-jacketed-hollow-point

Nosler - pricey, accurate as hell. Great for targets or varmints out to as far as you can shoot. http://www.midwayusa.com/product/949086/nosler-trophy-grade-ammunition-22-250-remington-55-grain-ballistic-tip-varmint-spitzer-box-of-20

Hornady - Mix of both. Cheap enough, yet accurate enough, to use for anything. P-dogs, to coyotes, to targets. http://www.midwayusa.com/product/630254/hornady-varmint-express-ammunition-22-250-remington-55-grain-v-max-box-of-20

Everyone has their favorite weight. Yes, I'm partial to the 55gr. For all-around use, the 55s are the best compromise in my opinion.

the trigger pull on my savage axis is pretty stiff...this model does not have the accutrigger...does anyone know if the trigger pull can be lightened or if there is an aftermarket trigger than can replace the stock trigger...I would appreciate any info that you have on this subject...or the name and number of a gunsmith who might know what i can do

Whether it's a 22-250 or 223 with 1 in 12, the 55 gr pills are very difficult to beat. I use 55 gr for varmints and 53 gr for target. Also, you need to find out if your rifle will shoot boattail bullets well before you spend some cash on them. Some rifles shoot flat base bullets much better. Just trying to save you some money.

Leepy3:

I have a Model 12 in 22-250 with the heavy 26" barrel 1:12 twist that came with the Accu Trigger. Nothing but problems with the trigger and quit functioning after less than 200 rounds. Trashed the Accu Trigger and replaced it with a Rifle Basix model. Easy to install and very happy with it. Breaks cleanly at 2 lbs and a significant improvement. The rifle shoots well with Sierra 55 gr. BK behind H380. Still plan on experimenting with different powder and bullet combinations.

Zia Hunter:
about the Savage Axis trigger pull question....the Axis is a good rifle that sells for under $400 but has a bad trigger that has a 5 to 7 lb pull...to get the same basic rifle with the accutrigger I would have had to pay $600 to $800 or more..., I called several gunsmiths that told me there was nothing they could do for my Savage Axis so, taking your advice, I looked up Rifle Basix website and they have a drop in trigger that is adjustable from 1 to 3 lb and sells for about $90 including shipping and installation instructions...and a money back guarentee...I called Clay at 704-499-3087 and he answered my questions. Thanks for the info Zia.
