Factory ammunition - When is the last time you shot it?

I do find that you really have to take your time when reloading the 223 due to the lower powder charge- compared to larger calibers. Not as forgiving if you our over/under on powder by any slight amount. I also weigh my bullets and group them. So- I am OCD!

I remember it well. The day before opening day of deer season. We got to the cabin and my youngest son forgot his ammo. Believe he was 12 at the time and now is 32. Quick run to the gas station at the cross roads and picked up a box of Remington 243 Winchester. Those were the days.

Didn't read all of the posts, but, I went to my range a while back and my shooting buddy was shooting factory Hornady 143 ELDX 6.5 Creed in a cheap assed Savage with an even cheaper tupperware stock at 300 yards. He had screwed a pre-chambered custom tube on it. When we went to take a look at the target...EVERY GROUP was 3/4 inch or less (3 shot groups).

To top it off......he was talking about reloading for it!!! I told him to stick to factory for that gun (hunting gun) and enjoy it.

Other than when I was still chasing leg points with the 45 and factory hardball was required(legged out in 03), and 22LR, it's was sometime in the late 70's.

Occasional shooting of aged self defense pistol ammo to turn it over and confirm POI. In rifles, I can't remember the last time I pulled the trigger on a factory round. I don't think it's exaggerating to say 20 years.

I did just buy a 500rd pack of 30-06 for my Garand. Seemed a nice supply for that rifle and a good opportunity for a uniform brass source for a 6.5-06AI I'm going to build.

With a new barrel I bought a box of 20 of Nosler "Custom" and Remington factory loads to establish a base line. The Mean Radius is the total for all 20 shots of a box, ie: 5 groups of 4 shots at 100 yards. Each shot is 10 minutes apart from the others. That is 3 hours 20 minutes for all 20 shots. Rifle is a 1962 FN Browning Safari with a Krieger 1/8 twist barrel in 264 Win Mag.
1) Remington: Mean Radius - 0.790'', 140 gr Core-Lokt PSP, advertised velocity - 3,030 fps
2) Nosler: Mean Radius - 0.470'', 120 gr E-tip, advertised velocity - 3,170 fps
3) Best handload to date" Mean Radius - 0.270", Winchester-Western brass, Sierra 140 gr Match HPBT, 61.5 gr of H-1000, Remington 9 1/2 M primers
I'm currently working on a load with some Barnes 127 gr LRX BT at 0.050" off the lands with RL-22 and Federal 215 primers, and Winchester-Western Brass. Preliminary data for 2 groups of four shots has a total Mean Radius of 0.030''.

I still have a bunch of factory 308 hunting ammo for my deer rifle. Usually shoot a couple of those every year. One to verify zero and one for the meat.
