F/TR can you use a suppressor

If I were you, I would ask Denys Beauchemin (BayouShooter) on this site. He is a walking "law library" for N.R.A. "High-Power" rules, including F-T/R rules. He shoots F-T/R and he WOULD know if it is allowed or not. I KNOW that no muzzle brakes are allowed. However, a suppressor is not a brake. Ask Denys..

NRA HIGH POWER RIFLE RULES
3.16.1 Compensators and Muzzle Brakes—The use of compensators or muzzle brakes is prohibited. An extension tube that has been installed on the muzzle of a rifle to extend the sight radius shall not be considered a “muzzle brake.” The extension tube must have an interior diameter of .5 inches or greater and may have 1/4 inch x 1 inch slots cut at 12 and 6 o’clock to remove cleaning patches. Threaded holes along the top of this tube for the installation of sight bases will be allowed.

(a) Sound suppressors are not authorized for use in high power competition.

I fought tooth and nail for suppressor use when we were writing the F Class rules. An AMU shooter/palma coach and a national level highpower shooters (now on the F Class team) recommendation the HP committee that they be banned because :

1) they are not available in all states and
2) they reduce recoil which is against the spirit of the rules and would start and arms race

I think it was short sighted, but such is life.

Most local match directors will allow it with the stipulation that you can't win the match and your scores don't go to the NRA.

Thanks Guys, Guess I will just have to fold a towel up several times and put it between me a the stock.

Unless you have some physical (medical) condition, a .308 in an 18lb rifle (since you asked about F/TR) doesn't kick *that* bad. Recoil with 200+ gn bullets can wear on a person over a days worth of shooting, though. For a long time, I used a 1" LimbSavr slip-on recoil pad (I was using it more for the extended LOP on a factory stock) and that should knock the recoil down for you, probably better than a folded up towel. If you are still having problems with recoil, you might try shooting 155gn bullets... very accurate, but they do drift more in the wind.

I think it is a USA thing many of clubs in the Uk you can't shoot a gun without one.
Funny NRA ranges you must wear ear protection . And the next ruling a suppresser isn't allowed. GO FIGURE. Larry

They are not allowed.
That's why we have a separate non-NRA approved Field Precision Rifle match so people can shoot them if they want to in that one.

Are suppressors legal to own in all 50 states? If not, that may be part of why they might not be allowed. Idk

Civilian ownership is prohibited in the District of Columbia and the following states: California, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont. Larry

Another direction to consider, a couple of the team members have had stocks built with hydraulic recoil absorbers installed. John Pierce has told me the felt recoil is almost negligible even when shooting the 215 Hybrids.

Your list is wrong. Supressors are legal in Michigan. Supressors give a competitive edge to those who use them.

Very invective and effective way to help with recoil but does nothing for sound That is what a suppressor does. Larry

Another viable solution, as far as reducing perceived recoil, is to use a Limbsaver recoil pad(*). I bought one for my 6-1/2 lb Tikka T3 300WSM rifle, and the Limbsaver pad reduced the felt recoil to less than that of a 308.

(*) These cost between $22 and $28 at Amazon.
