F-class Classification breakdown

If you guys want to work on anything get rid of the palma for LR. I got my LR HM card in a palma 800,900,1000 match with a rifle that was hardly tuned and I felt I shot lousy. No way I should hold a HM card from that match. To me it diminishes the HM classification.

Well alrighty then....

Alternatively, the NRA could make things much better by simply adjusting the target scoring rings for 800 and 900 yd targets smaller in proportion to the scoring rings of the 1000 yd target, similar to how the midrange 300/500/600 targets are done (i.e. at a minimum, use constant angular dimensions). The total number of shots required to change classification would remain the same.

Palma has been around for over 140 years, there is arguably no more historic match in all of shooting. Let’s leave it how it is, Palma shooters like it that way.

I totally agree. I would also vote to drop the 300 and 500 yard from the midrange.

I would not like to see that. I have limited ranges available to me, with 500 yard being the primary range. To eliminate the 300 and 500 yard ranges from the MR class would be unfair to a lot of shooters. Additionally, as many start at the shorter ranges and then move up, you might be limiting the growth of the sport.

I will add, I personally find 300 yards challenging. I am a HM at mid range however, I discovered while shooting in Spokane last season, my tune is no good at 300 and have had to work on that.
Previously, I had not shoot at 300 yards, all of my shooting had been at 600, I found 300 and 500 added a bit of fun.

I didnt mean to get rid of palma, just dont give me a lr hm card for a palma match is all. Shooting 800,900,1000 is easier than shooting all at 1000.

Well, that's easy then. Just shoot out of competition and don't submit your scores to NRA for Palma matches if you don't want those scores to be considered for classification. No need for anyone else to do anything.

Are we talking F-Class or Sling? I'm all for the sling guys and gals shooting Palma. That's the sport. And I, as a F-Class shooter, more than likely will shoot a round of Palma at any given match that sling and F are combined. I'm fine with that.

Shooting 300 and 500 yards at F-Class Nationals? Why? The world didn't stop spinning in 2011 or 12, whenever it was, that all LR shooting started being conducted from the 1000 yd line at Nat's. Why bother with packing your crap and moving when you can just lay down and shoot?

I think it’s pretty clear we are talking about 2 different things. All you needed to do was quote my whole post, instead of just part of it. And read what I was responding to. I have no opinion whatsoever on what distances are shot at F-class Nationals.

I personally like shooting at different yardages. I have not shot 800, 900 and 1000 in quite a while. But the 300, 500 and 600 yardages allow me to get good rifle data for hunting. Plus with land becoming more expensive and urban sprawl closing in on ranges. It would be unwise to eliminate any of the ranges currently holding matches by casting a side the 300 and 500 yard matches. The more shooting participants there are the better for the entire shooting community.

I was merely making the observation that the NRA could change the scoring rings for F-Class when using the Palma match format, simply as one possible way to make scoring more uniform in F-Class across the various distances used per Alex's post. Not Palma Class, F-Class, get it? Palma shooters can and will continue to use whatever targets they want. His observation that it is easier to obtain the F-Class HM card via Palma format matches is not a new one. Folks have recognized for years that you have a better chance of shooting a good score at 800/900 yd on a target with the same sized scoring rings as one shot at 1000 yd...HUH? Seriously, if it were up to me, F-Class shooters would be only shooting one of 3 targets: MR-63FC @ 300 yd, MR-1FC @ 600 yd, or LRFC @ 1000 yd. They would also never be shooting more than one target [distance] within the same match. But that's just me.

You shoot your hunting rifles during a Fclass match? Not that there is anything wrong with that... but I'd be more concerned about my cold bore than what my hunting rifle is doing 20 shots in. Just saying.

I hunt with a GAP 308. Not a light gun but works. Even if I used a lighter gun the come ups would be about the same. I use a Harris bipod and just a sock filled with poly beads in the rear. Not out of the scope of possibilities for use in the field. I have a 6.5 Creed that I have used once in a match. It is lighter weight but did not want to shoot open. So I just used it once to get the feel for its performance at a longer distance than my local range had. When I shoot a match beating my previous score is my only goal, winning not so much. But if I keep improving winning will be assured.
