F Class Classifications

I think the F class targets are fine. The Open guys don't clean them that often, way less often than the High Power guys, and they still aren't shooting 200-20Xs either. It's not like when we shot on the HP targets in 2005 or 2006 when Frank Beckman shot like a 200-23X or something like that.

F-TR is masochistic and F-Open is self gratification, you just have to figure out which type of deviant you are and be happy there.

Why does it matter if both classes are classified the same way? You are only competing against F-T/R shooters anyway.

Which is why the NRA adopted the new target in 2007.

I shot the Spirit of America late in '06, got squadded late the first Sunday due to an equipment snafu. Shot with 3 F-Class shooters on the new target (I went to shoot, not walk away) & did OK with my Palma rifle. Heck I bought a Sinclair bi-pod at Perry Friday, might give F-TR a try next year too.

Classification is set of steps and goals that lead to achievement. There is limited real estate at the top of a hill and difficult ground to hold with a bullseye on your back. It does not secure you to anything and you must dig in to stay there.

Maybe I didn't make myself clear in my first post. In the future I plan on shooting both F/TR and F Open. If all goes well. I see no reason why I couldn't make High Master in F/Open if I get to shoot in ideal conditions. If/when that happens, if I ever shoot F/TR again I'll have to carry over that High Master Classification to F/TR, and in my opinion it would be a false Classification since I didn't shoot it in F/TR.

At our last shoot the F/Open winner shot a 600/33X with a Dasher. The high F/TR Score was 585/23X. Both were very good scores, but that 223 being shot off of a bipod couldn't pack with the Dasher being shot off of a rest.

I don't want to change the target. Just have the NRA classify the shooters at the level they perform in either F Open or F/TR.

Will the classifications every be used as a type of handicap system to "level" the shooting scores?

That was what I thought they were originally but it seems to be used otherwise.

Now you have a gross and net score winner. Might prove to be a big motivator for those of lesser skills and gear.

The classification system was designed to allow shooters of similar skill levels to compete against each other, within their classification. There is an overall winner to recognize the best. To my knowledge, it was never intended to "level" the shooting scores or as some kind of handicap. Shooting excellence is about achieving favorable outcomes through effort, not rule manipulation.

As long as you are trying to win the aggregate and not your class, then classification means nothing.

I personally have never worried about classification since I have always tried to win the whole thing not just my class.

At the natls there is cash for winning your class. Not a get rich deal but a few bucks. And in the results you do get credit for the achievement.

Eric and several other serious competitors are determined to win at all costs and personal sacrifice. It is a level that cannot be classified or sold.

Call me Bandit, because I would much rather have some shiny bauble than a small cash award. When I look at medals, trophies, plaques, etc. that I've won, I remember every detail of the event. When events provide only cash, the memory is less persistent. [br]
Our local clubs have started providing awards like framed certificates, club pins for scores at 600 and 1000 according to classification, t-shirts and coffee mugs that can only be obtained by winning. These trinkets mean more to me than getting my match fee back. That goes back in the wallet and is soon gone. [br]
Attached are crappy phone pictures of the mug that one of our clubs awards. I don't know what these cost but they are made in the U.S. This means so much more to me than the seven to ten dollars it probably cost.

There will always be ranking based on raw score and thus talent. The use of handicap is always treated as a separate tally. Many sports now use it and it just gives the competition another dimension.

We don't have these classifications in Canada as we are shooting for the best raw score possible so it was interesting to see the NRA setting up this system and was just curious on its intent.

Yes and no.

At a big match, yes you will shoot within your class. At a club level match there may not be the 5 shooters to make up a class and the F/TR guys will compete with the F Open shooters. I agree with Ken (the original poster). You may very well be a HM in F Open and an Expert in F/TR. Next time out to a big match shooting F/TR, guess what? You will compete in HM no matter the division you shoot thanks to attaining HM in F Open. Hardly a fair representation of your capabilities in F/TR with a .308 or .223.

I think the divisions should separate. No need to change target sizes, but there is a need to differentiate between F/TR and F Open. I'm a pretty good F/TR shooter and I can put away some of the F Open guys, but a shooter with equal experience shooting a 7 or a Dasher is going to eat my .308.
