Extreme bullets

Can someone tell me why the 308 150gr copper plated bullets are only good for 1200-1500 fps. I have been looking for a bullet to use with my subsonic loads in my 308 Win and 7.62x40WT. What is the purpose of these bullet? Are they good for hunting? Deer? Hogs? Or just practice?

I do know thier plated pistol bullets have a very thin coating of copper (kinda painted on), the main purpose is to prevent leading in the barrel and lead exposure to skin and air during firing indoors. They work great for pistols. I never used for rifle loads.

First let me say, I kind of misspoke on the subsonic loads, I'm trying to develop a subsonic load for my two bolt guns. I do know that subsonic speed is under 1100 fps, but I didn't think it would make much difference with a suppresser. I would like to keep the fps close to 1500 fps to minimize the risk of damage to the suppresser. I was not necessarily looking for a solid copper bullet but I would like to stay between 150-168gr bullets for target shooting and hunting if possible.

Most subsonic round ive heard of people doing is 220 gr bullet or so under trailboss powder... sounds like your looking for a reduced recoil load and not a subsonic... if iys a good suppressor it shouldnt matter if its full power loads or subsonic they should all work fine.... a non subsonic load wont sound much different than a full power with the suppressor....

Im still confused on what your wanting...

Just get cup and core (regular rifle bullets) with a hollow point and it should be fine. Why would shooting under 1100 fps hurt a suppressor???

Guys, i think we have gotten off track from my original post and maybe I put in a little too much info. MY fault. I was asking about the usage of the Extreme Bullets and why they specify a recommended velocity of 1200-1500 fps for there copper plated .308 150gr bullets. Are they any good for hunting or just plinking? Has anyone on this site used these bullets?

And if I miss spoke on the terminology of subsonic, I apologize. If these velocities, 1200-1500 fps are considered reduced recoil, then I stand corrected.

Since the subject was brought up, Hodgdon list 8.0gr of Titegroup or Clays under a 168gr bullet will produce 1080 fps out of a 24" 12 twist barrel. My 308 Win bolt gun barrel is 18" with a 10 twist, would the fps be slower or faster? Which powder can I use to safely acheive a reduced recoil load of approximately 1500 fps? Thanks for your comments and the lesson.

Xtreme recommends using lead bullet data when reloading their plated bullets. I think the plating is too thin to take higher velocities.

So do you guys think the Extreme Bullets are worth using for velocities between 1100-1800 fps? Either for hunting or plinking?

Cort is right. Most manufacturers of plated bullets recommend using lead load data, due to the bullets only having a thin layer of plating over the lead. A true full metal jacket can take the higher velocities, while a plated jacket is so thin that it can come apart if pushed too hard or fast.

Lyman reloading manual is a good source for lead load data. I have used plated bullets for many years, but only for plinking and target or trigger practice. A bullet designed for hunting is probably your best bet, but you can always do dome expansion tests on your own with the plated rounds. A call to X-Treme would be the first thing to do, and as for powders, try using what the lead load data recommends. This is only my opinion, and everyone has one. If I have the bullet manufacturer correct, you can always order some rounds from freedom munitions that are loaded with their bullets. I know some of the pistol ammo is topped with X-Treme, but not sure about .308

Best of luck Ron,

Dave
