Expander lube

Has anyone tried hornady one shot for expander lube? Today I used imperial wax and imperial dry lube then Hornady . I found the one shot seemed to work much smoother?

When full length resizing and spraying the cases at the proper angle to cover the inside of the case necks Hornady One Shot works very well. And the best part is Hornady One Shot does not have to be removed or cleaned off like other type lubes.

It is important to follow the instructions for application and to clean the die with a solvent and remove all old sizing lubes. And then spray the inside of the die, if this is not done I think it is the main cause of stuck cases. (don't ask me how I know this)

I would not use it for neck turning because it is a dry film lube and I think it is better to have the neck float on a thicker film of lube on the mandrel. I use Hornady Unique case lube when turning case necks, it is thicker and takes up more slop between the mandrel and case neck.

My 2 cents.

Watch out for HBN

My experience with this stuff is not good. I used it on bullets and two different barrels (260AI and 7SAUM). Both lost pressure and precision. I did not have enough case capacity to get back to my original velocity and precision was a casualty in both cases. Furthermore, when I tried to remove the stuff it couldn't be done. Both barrel got trashed.

I wasn't the only one either. At leas 6 or 7 of us (F-Class shooters here at Bayou Rifle in Houston) tried it and a year later no one goes near the stuff. You can't say you weren't warned.

We’re not talking about coating bullets just using if for expander ball lube. I’m also an F Open shooter.

Muleman, in general, you would reach for a strong liquid lube for cutting work. Strong means the lube needs to act as a coolant and low friction agent. Solids can work well in extreme pressure contexts, however they are not as good in cutting operations because they tend to be much weaker at heat dissipation.

Neck sizing is one of those contexts that can work with both liquid and dry lubes. Imperial is certainly one of the best at die working brass, but the dry lubes work too. Just remember that loading is very complex and when the dynamics of the neck tension must factor in the friction behavior of the inside of the neck, any lube that stays there becomes part of your recipe. That doesn’t make it right or wrong, but make sure that variable isn’t random or out of control.

If you use lube there, and don’t keep track, you may find yourself frustrated. Just make sure whichever route you take, that your process is consistent and intentional.

Lots of ways people do it but here’s what I do. I have a delrin block that I milled out so that I can insert 22 rounds at a time. I spray One Shot in the necks and this keeps it off everywhere else before I use gage pins to expand before throwing powder and seating. I realize it’s not really an issue for most people but I figure the cleaner I keep the outside of the neck the better.

I've been using Hornady One Shot for several years now to size cases. I really like it a lot. You can tilt the cases to you a little and spray inside the necks and it works great. Its important to shake the can very well, as instructed, and let it dry for a few minutes. I spray inside the die only once unless I clean it. Then I spray inside again after cleaning. It is easy to wipe off after sizing.. Never had a stuck case and I think it works great. I used imperial Sizing die wax for a long time and it works well also. Just much harder to get off the case and I never used it inside the neck because I wouldn't be able to get it out as well as I wanted too. YMMV but I really like it a lot....
