Equifax Settlement - You likely qualify for $125

I had to clear up my credit up after having an order of personal checks stolen out of the mail system. Took 3 years for the collection letters to stop arriving, and the required paperwork to respond to each and every letter or phone call. I had a 3 inch binder full of letters and documents, this from 24 checks that were used totaling $8,000 loss that the bank covered. At $25 per hour, I'd have made a bundle, but got nothing for my efforts as this was 20 years ago. Id theft is no small issue, and if not handled properly can cost you everything, or at least a lot of lawyer fees to clear it up afterward.

A couple of years ago I was standing in a field over a deer I'd just shot when my bank called to ask if I was on the phone with them requesting $500 emergency cash. Obviously it was fraud, but long after the taste of that deer was a faded memory, the memory of that phone call is still fresh.

Do you all freeze your credit reports? That can go a long way in being a harder target. Don’t have to run faster than the bear you just have to be faster than your hiking buddy.

We had a similar experience maybe eight years ago when checks for bills were stolen out of the mailbox. Wife and I went to Home Depot and our check was declined:mad:. We were given a number to call and found out the thieves had printed our routing and account number on three different banks. We looked at our bank account on line and what a mess. Called Police who kindly gave us a case number. Whoopee. Bank first thing next morning and bank replace all the funds stolen and cancelled any checks drawn on that account. Then the crap really hit the fan because Mattress Firm gave a bad credit review on us and our credit report took a nose dive. Took a year and a half to clear that mess up. What a nightmare.
Today, I review my bank accounts every morning, use a Debit Card (which has had the numbers stolen three times) and checks are limited to our business only. After the third Debit Card number theft, I opened another Debit Card that I use strictly for on line and one time purchases. I transfer money from main account into the On Line Debit Card account only as much and when needed. It works very well. Was calling an order in to Brownells and gave her the OLDC account number and was declined. Ask her to hold for a minute, open bank account, transferred amount needed into the On Line account, asked her to run it again. Viola! ! All is well. :) I suggest this for those that do a bit of on line purchasing. It can be re-assuring.
Last story, we now have Zander Identity Theft Protection and I use this same ON Line Debit Card. They came in the middle of the night to do a renewal and were declined. Got a somewhat tacky email from them so I called them up and told them I set them up on that account to prevent exactly what they were trying to do, and I wasn't all that nice about. Gushing apologies and I told them to run it again at their convenience, that the funds were now there. I'm reviewing my bank accounts a few days later and I see were they notified the bank that they were making a withdrawal in a few days. Things are better now.
Finally, my rant. I NEVER asked any of those Credit Bureau Companies to do a Credit Profile on me or my Business. They took it upon themselves to steal our identity and our spending habits WITHOUT our permission and failed to safeguard it. This breech didn't affect me and I feel for those that had their lives turned upside down because of incompetence. Just makes me BOIL:mad:
As a side note, we finally got the San Antonio Police Department off their ass and we caught everyone of those thieving bastards. Prison for four of them from 4 years to 8 years.
IDENTITY THEFT IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM AND WILL ONLY GET WORSE AS THE NUMBER OF GET RICH QUICK LOSERS GROWS LARGER.

Thanks to those who read this, I'm done,
Robert

Regarding my stolen checks experience, I had video of the purps at the Kroger Market buying a few small items and writing a check for $80 over. The store manager I was talking to said that was a violation of company policy. I said you think the checker might be in on it? The checker never returned to work, and he pulled the tab on the video tape and put it in his safe for the police.

I called the local police (Dallas) and they couldn't be less interested. Said they get hundreds of these complaints everyday but the stores will not press charges or go to court, so they don't arrest. Kroger feels it's not worth the time and money. They pay the check guarantee companies for their service and are reimbursed through them. So almost no one polices the check fraud gangs. Easy money!

Reisel, you must have a very strong leg and an awfully big boot to get those results. Well done, sir!

My gun club required 2 signatures on our company checks. The bank never enforced it though and told me they say that for the customers sake. The Treasurer made off with $77,000.00 +/-. I still contend a bank staff was in on it, but our prosecutor refused to charge.

Form boss says this is a scam.

It's not a scam. I'm posting with my real name, linking a .gov website, that has endless news articles (from reputable sources) that will tell you the same thing.

If it is a scam, it would rival the largest in all recorded history.

I was mainly making a joke- i dont think its a scam. But the way i see it, if my info got compromised then they should give me the money. It seems fishy to want my info to check to see if my info was stolen.

I agree. If the class action is opt-out, then no one should have to do anything. They should be mailing everyone a check, unless you file for additional compensation.

Personally, I think the government needed to crush them into the history books to set an example and restore public faith. Unfortunately, the 3 are very powerful and Equifax probably was able to influence the settlement behind the scenes.

There are allot of ppl on other forums that didn't get compromised..... So i guess they only got broken into at certain places in their hd's.

Some of you may have seen in the news that Equifax reached a settlement for their unprecedented data breach some time back. It's time for all those put at risk to claim their settlement.

The way I read the stuff, you have to have incurred time or expense BECAUSE of the Equifax breach -- not just have been "put at risk."

Thanks for this 250.00 The wife and I were both effected, so checks are being requested.

How did you determine that you and "the wife" incurred time or expense BECAUSE of the Equifax breach?

You misread it. If your info was exposed, they will pay. If you incurred additional expenses, they will pay more.
