engraving tool

I want to get an engraving tool to do barrels and mark actions when threads are cut oversize.

Don't know what to get. not looking for cheap way out. I want something that is easy to set up,
and does good looking lettering.

I've been doing the electro etch , but I'm tired of making stencils that last for only one job.

I've never checked into this before . So any and all suggestions will be helpful.

Butch Lambert , please chime in. I've seen your work and it's first class.

thank you in advance.

Like butch most gunsmiths use a new hermes pantograph with a diamond drag. I bought mine plus learned to use it from a trophy shop that went to computer engravers. If the shop was around 15yrs ago theyll have one in the back in the corner covered with dust and lots of fonts. Jewelers are the same way.

Ken,
I use a new hermes engraver, got it off ebay with six sets of fonts.... Takes up no room and does nice work too.

A diamond scribe will not "Satisfy the BATF". The motorized models with carbide cutter will cut deep enough to make the BATF happy.

Type 1 FFL Gunsmith or non FFL is not even required to engrave anything. Type 7 Manufacture is required, FFL name, Address, at least .003" "deep by 1/16" tall.
Serial number can be shared if waiver has been filed with BATF.
