ELR BUILD QUESTION

One thing that I learned is that even though many calibers will reach 2,000 yards, it's difficult to see the hits with smaller bullets.

I look forward to your response to the first question.
 
Buy a TUBBGUN with 3 or 4 barrels 6XC,33XC,37XC or a 41XC.
Practice your technique with the minor caliber. Shoot the major calibers in matches.
You only need one set of dies for the major calibers and you can reload all of them on your current press.
If you average out your caliber cost based on 4 different barrels each will be about $2500.
 
I built a 338LM Imp. Great brass, decent barrel life. 300 grain OTM @ 3040. I have 2500 avalible to shoot at. If I had 3000+ yards READILY available , I might have done something different. Ask yourself, where you going to shoot it?
 
I don’t care to drive to go shoot lol Ill just load up an head out an go shoot the 338lm imp is like the edge right ?
 
I would only consider 338 and larger. 37 and 41 calibers each have an excellent new bullet about to come on line. Hornady's ATips will make a splash, pun intended, when they become available. I have samples here now and the 375 is calling me.
Remember you have to balance the weight of the rifle to weight of the bullet used. To light a rifle makes it difficult to manage torque and recoil.
 
How long is a rope? the question is so broad that a good answer is impossible. A savage in 338 Lap or a rig like Mr Tubb mentioned. Its probably 12 -15 years old now but mine is a 338Lap with a Rock Creek 30 inch barrel on a Sako TRGS action. Its not near as ELR capable as the newer larger calibers, but none of that was around back then. The 408 was out but many were finding the rifle they built didn't like the one bullet that was made in .408.
 
If you want to see some over the top calibers look at Anzio Iron's web site they are in Saint Petersburg, Florida.
 
My one recommendation if you go with something you can't buy off the shelf, or is a wildcat or some Variant
Get good dies FIRST! Have the rifle chambered to match the die. Ask me how I know! All the really cool looking variations of standard offerings and the performance benefit will be offset by the inability to get good matching dies. T-Rust me. Rifle was done and it took another year of fiddle-fing
With dies before I finally got it figured out..
And yes, I sent the twice fired brass into the big players. Ended up with a Warner and an empty wallet, but wow!, nice die Zero runout.

Care to comment on the 33 & 37 XC. With dies and Brass readily available from Tubbs. Chamber reamers available to match.
