Electric Cars -- anyone own one?

I'm so old I don't want a vehicle with a computer in it.

I'm fine with 1 computer, I just don't want dozens of them.

Something like a modern/reliable crate engine would suite me just fine. Still simple enough to troubleshoot, but I don't have to worry about the 100 other modules that all have the potential to cause a parasitic drain when there's water intrusion issues somewhere.

The Dealer Cost of a Tesla Battery Replacement

According to an invoice from Tesla shared by Current Automotive, a complete 75kWh battery replacement for a Model 3 costs $16,550.67. That's $2,299.27 in labor and $14,251.40 in parts, with the actual battery costing $13,500.
However, battery prices may vary depending on your vehicle model. As Rich Rebuilds shared, remanufactured packs cost between $9,000 and $10,000, while new batteries can cost up to $22,500.

If you're going to replace your damaged battery pack with a remanufactured one, the average cost would probably be around $13,000 to $17,000, depending on the complexity of the work. However, if you opt for a completely new battery, you should be ready to shell out upwards of $25,000.

There have been instances of EV owner totaling their cars in various ways to avoid paying for a new battery and getting out of the loan.
Depending on how far you drive and when you can charge/off peak hours and if you have to run the AC or heater a lot it may or may not be suitable for you. I would go the hybrid route so I'm never stranded.

If you lease it, drive around town, I think they're great! Yeah, Tesla will bend you over for Battery repair/replacement. There are more and more shops that are specializing in ev repair and hacks for battery packs. Doing your research first is a smart move. Not going to be one in my future though.

The trouble is, the all so wise policy makers all believe we all live in Manhattan or DC. Out here on the great Great Plains, towns are sometimes hours apart. Charging stations are unheard of. We have desolation and big hills and cold and heat. (All of which are way better than the insanity of blue cities.)

It will be a LONG time before EV's become practical IMHO. But the policy makers are largely isolated from their decisions, so what do they care?

I'd love a Toyota Hilux from the 90s. Stick Shift, 22R Engine ... I'd even take a 4x2.
I'm nearly there. I drive a 2007 Tacoma extra cab, 4.0 engine, 6 speed. Only 117K on it, still tight and runs like a striped ass ape. I told my wife the other day, I always wanted an old Toyota 4x4, hell.... I have one! 22R's were some of the best engines ever built, bar none.

300-1500 miles.
Given your stated requirements, I wouldn't even consider any EV with current battery technology. Hybrid Yes. All electric No. The low end of your stated range is close to the maximum of current EV truck ranges, and that's under ideal conditions WITHOUT Trailer.

The solid state batteries may change max ranges ... but we are not there yet.

I got a Tesla 3 months ago. I live in CO. Have already driven it to CA and FL. It's my wife and my only car.

As a daily driver:. Crazy economical. If I charged from 0% to 100% it would cost $5.25. This would get me 250 miles or so highway I think. It costs even less, though, since we have solar.

On trips the Superchargers are roughly the same cost as gas - when using gas prices before the runup. With today's prices it's a savings. The extensiveness of the Supercharger network makes road trips very easy. Waiting for charging initially sounds bad....but they happen when you gotta pee and eat anyway.

It is INSANELY fun to drive. Far better than any gas car I've ever owned. Extremely fast and extremely smooth. Handles great. Very quiet.

If someone is looking for a financial justification for going electric you won't find it buying a Tesla.....just like you won't justify financially purchasing a Porsche or BMW or ......

Im waiting for Airforce One to go EV, then I might consider it...
Hard to imagine current battery technology in aviation considering that unlike liquid fuels whose weight is shed as it’s consumed, battery weight doesn’t change as charge density decreases…
