educate me on long range muzzle loaders

So we only got 2 weeks of rifle season here in the great state if VA. Looking to extend our season with a muzzle loader. I currently have one, but wanting to go beyond 150 yards.
What are my options? Muzzle loader? Bullet? Powder? Etc. I know nothing about this.

Currently have a CVA shooting 230xtp with 83gr of triple 7. It shoots moa at 100-150. Beyond that, it's all over the place. Looking for something that will get out to 300 yards. What's out there?

Easy to accomplish smokeless. You have a lot of options too. I would say go with a .45 cal. Smokeless setup. You can spend big bucks for a full custom or go on a budget with a break open conversion or a Savage smokeless muzzleloader or anything in between.

This is my custom gun - Dolemite. 300gr. bullet 2980 - 3000 fps. I have put as many as 7 consecutive shots in the same hole at 100yds.

Pm. me and tell me more about what you are wanting to do and I will try to help you out.

The Smith I use also makes muzzle loaders that shoots regular smokeless powder. Ranges of 1k are not uncommon.
Totally blows my mind.

I'm clueless about this. With a rig like that is the bullet lubed? -- sabot, patched, jacketed, ?? I'm interested. jd

I shoot with a guy at Williamsport that makes one. They shoot 2 and 3 inch groups at 600 yards all the times. My buddy got one and I watched him shoot it at 100 yards. I was impressed because it shot one hole. He told me they all do that. The guy showed me a target from 1000 yards, 3 shots a hair over 3 inches, pretty impressive. He makes the sizing die and everything needed and sells as a complete package. Matt

We can't use smokeless in MI. So I run 777 and weigh every charge. Using cutting edge maximum bullets in a Knight mountaineer and 240gr XTPs with the green crush rig sabots in TC Contender .50x209. Ive taken a whitetail at 502 yards with one. Most of the time our shots are 350-400 and under.

Ive spent lots of time playing with powder bullets and sabots to get the combos to work correctly. Having a bullet that will expand when it gets there is also critical

Before LA allowed us to use single shots for Black Powder season I had migrated to a CVA INline in 45 caliber. IDR what saboted bullet I was using but it was the lightest I could find and I also found that the Pellets pretty much suck with 209 primers. Shooting loose pyrodex or 777 up to 130gr I was getting out to 200yds with a 3-4 group.
Before that I was using a caplock with Musket caps and real BP and before that a Lyman GP flintlock with Patched Round Balls or Mini Balls and still shooting out to 200yds with great results. Talk about needing follow through and shitty "lock time"

Wish I could sell my knight inline, ss hd with the yellow shotgun primer holder.
No market here anymore. It's practically unused.

Got my 45 cal from Luke, it's crazy accurate with the 315's of his....
70 gr H4198 & bore riders make tiny holes at any sane distance out to 500 yards...

My smokeless isn't anything special, just an old Savage MLII in 50 cal, but you can see what you shot at. IIRC I'm running 250s over 65gr of IMR4895. I tried a 70gr duplex with a booster but didn't really see any difference at fall temps, but it may be a bit slow when it's cold. I haven't had the time to test fully

Before I got the Savage I had a Knight rolling block that I took shots out to 160 with great accuracy using shock waves and Triple 7. I had a cheap Bushnell muzzle loader scope with a BDC that I dialed my load to be spot on out to 200yds. Combine that with a LRF and the only deer I ever missed was one that someone else ranged incorrectly.

I‘ve done some research (reading here and there) and think a smokeless powder ML is a nifty idea.

A friend pulled the trigger and had a custom smokeless ML built and its pretty impressive.

Theres a guy on here that builds them. Forgot the screen name. He utilizes the only remington 700 pattern receiver for black powder guns?

Then custom barrel, yada yada, they shoot GOOD. Hopefully he will chime in. I wanted to have one built but never got around to it.

If you want to keep it to 300 yards, a .45 conversion with 200 grain SSTs, smooth blue Harvester sabots and 60 to 62 grains of 4198 will give you 1 moa or less at that distance, plenty accurate for deer.
. If you want to stretch it out, you need to go with land riders, more powder and lot more investment in equipment. Cheap route is with Arrowhead parts. Buy the cheapest Savage centerfire you can find, a bolt head, .45 barrel, breech plug and you're set.
