E.R. Shaw work?

I have an ER Shaw in .223, SS, 24". Shoots little holes in targets and drops varmints with every shot unless I mess up.

I live about 12 miles from the E R Shaw facility in Bridgeville Pa., and several years ago had them do a re-barrel job.

The barrel coppered to the extreme & "accuracy" was non-existant. 'Scoped the bore with my Hawkeye & the surface looked like a Nicholson file with reamer & tool marks the entire length.

Took it back, they apologized, said the rifle should have never left their shop & they handed me a check for a complete refund. I still have a copy of that refund check.

There was never any attempt to place the blame on me & they were very fair and upfront about the entire issue. For that, they have my respect.

If you are looking for a hunting type barrel, utility grade, they may be a good choice, just don't expect the quality of a Bartlein, Krieger, etc. They have been in business for a very long time, so must be doing something right.

None of this is meant as criticism of E R Shaw, just pointing out my single experience. I know others who have been very pleased with their services.

Over the years I have come to the conclusion that when you buy an expensive barrel from one of the premium manufacturers what you're paying for is the higher likelyhood that you're going to get a good barrel. When you buy a cheap one you're taking a higher risk that you'll get a bad barrel. E.R. Shaw has a lot of widespread opinions on their accuracy and quality.

Bob: Their biggest drawback is the fact that their barrels are not handlapped, and for the cost, they could not be expected to be.

Approximately $150 for a Shaw versus $320 (+) for a Krieger, Bartlein, Hart, etc. Really not a fair comparison. Like optics, another example of: "You get what you pay for".

Other than the quality of the barrel, they did excellent work on fitting, chambering, and provided a blueing finish that was second to none.

I would like to see them offer the buyer the choice of a "standard" barrel, or for an additional cost, one that has been handlapped, but like I said, they have been in business for a very long time, so they must be doing something right, and who am I to say they're not.

I have a Savage prefit from them that has only decent accuracy...1 MOA. Perhaps my expectations were too high, but I had hoped for better. They are probably fine for hunting rifles, but I won't buy one for varmints or targets.

Now heres the flip side.I bought a savage prefit for a .308 project and it came threaded for a muzzle brake and parkerized. I got it right.I cleaned the heck out of it and jb paste was next. When I was done I scoped it and it looked really nice and shoots 1/2 min of angle. Maybe its a fluke and maybe its not.Its hard to say seeing as they make alot of private label barrels for gun builders.I have correspondence with others and they love them for the money. They make excellent rifled shotgun barrels as well.I would have had them rebarrel the one they screwed up and tried one anyway. When I first bought a mcgowen I was very leary and was pleasantly surprised as they are lapped. All 3 outshoot bigger name barrels at half the price.Go figure.

Very interesting indeed....Maybe a good thing I bought a shieln then....Maybe that wouldn't be worth a damn either..Will find out in a couple of weeks..

gatorman: If you bought a stainless Shilen it will have been hand-lapped & should be an excellent barrel.

If you bought the lesser cost (about $50) chrome-moly, it will not be lapped & you may have some reamer & tool marks in the bore.

At least that has been my experience with Shilen barrels.

I've used Douglas barrels for my hunting rifles and have been very pleased.

ALL of the barrel makers have a bad one now & then. I have a Shaw barrel that is every bit as good as my Krieger or Shilen barrels. It just flat out shoots. For a hunting barrel, especially for the 1st pass, I really don't think it's a bad way to go. I have finished & headspaced a couple of their barrels for others and have always been impressed with their machining. Nice threads & nice chambers. All have shot very well for a non-lapped barrel. One advantage that they have over some other non lapped barrels is that they heat treat the barrel BEFORE it is button rifled. This results in a better interior finish that if it was buttoned & then heat treated.

I scoped a new .308 large shank savage barrel and it looked really smooth with few reamer marks of any kind.I also am pleased as they are affordable.

Was recently talking to a clubmember who bought a Shaw barrel & had to return it also. He also was given a refund with an apology with the explanation that they had some new hires & they weren't up to speed in their skills.

Like anything else, you may get a good, average or poor one.

The good news is that they stand behind their product.

I've used 6 shaw barrels over the last 5 years and have not a hitch with any of them. They all shoot great and clean easy. I had them do all the work on my Mauser build and it's a great shooter also.

Mauser. They trued the receiver lapped bolt lugs and bolt face installed their bolt handle installed custom shroud and did the rebarrel. The total price was 630 to my door.
