?"Dried"? case lube

I use lanolin and hornady one shot.... Recently I use one shot and it weeps out of the vent hole in the die, and I have to keep my eye on the shoulder for dents. So much for dry lube Hornady says.....it has lanolin a phone rep told me.

I made sure I shook it well and held the can at a 45 degree angle. Also shook it from time to time.... I know I shook it enough from the dents at the bottom of the can !

Any thoughts?

I prefer RCBS lube. Been using it since 1962. Very few dents. Mostly my fault . Over lubed. Just my two cents Tommy Mc

I think the idea is to apply it and then wait for it to dry?

anyway, I quit using it coz I dont have the patience to wait for it to dry and pretty much anything slippery works just fine as a case lube, and in almost all cases, the less you use, the better

For one shot : I spray the die inside(after cleaning) prior to sizing. I wear gloves(I have a slight sensitivity to the carrier) and spray the brass in a zip lock bag(when no expander is in use). Shake the bag, a second 1-2 second spray and shake. Dump into a cardboard flat to dry, usually a couple minutes. For any "real" forming I use imperial wax, lip balm works well for neck work(cheap and stores convenient). I don't "mix" lubes, only one shot or completely different lube.

Per instructions on can*:
1/ Disassemble die and remove prior case lube.
2/ Apply light coat of 1-shot inside die-allow a few seconds to dry
3/ Clean inspect cases
4/ Arrange cases in a loading block
5/ Shake can, spray cases thoroughly at 45' angle.
6/ 1-shot is a non-petroleum product and will not contaminate powder or primers
7/ After waiting about 1 minute -begin case sizing.
8/ After sizing wipe each case and remove remaining lubricant.
*Note: My can is ~ 15 years old - Hornady may have changed directions or formula. I tried it and I do not like it. I have heard too many negatives about it- on this forum and at matches. First the stuff reeks to high heaven and I learned a long time ago to keep water and solvents out of cases. If I am supposed to wipe it off anyway, I'll just stick to Royal or Imperial sizing wax.

1974, Been using RCBS lube on the case body and a small amount of Imperial die wax on the necks. Keep the shoulders clear of lube and you will not have dents. Have used my stuck case remover twice in all those years. Keep your dies clean. If ain't broke don't fix it.

READ THE INSTRUCTIONS. Hornady One Shot spray lube is to be sprayed on the cases and a shot given up in the size die then they are to DRY a few minutes before use.

I have been using One Shot aerosol about since it came on the market with NO PROBLEMS.
I tried the pump bottle, which I don't think they make anymore, a few times and even letting it dry like instructed I got stuck cases. I don't know if it was a bad batch but pitched it into the trash and never tried it again.

I place my cases mouth up in one of the plastic boxes that pistol ammo comes packed in or a loading block. I skip a slot between cases. I then spray with a downward angle to get lube inside the case neck and get on the case. I let it set for a few minutes to dry. You can actually do this days before if you want to. I also give a shot up into the size die and let it dry. Sizes like butter.

I usually put the sized cases back into my tumbler filled with Lyman treated corn cob for a little bit and it will remove any lube residue.

I use Dillon spray lube for bulk stuff. Put a bunch of brass in a big ziplock, spray it, shake it up, roll it around, etc., allow to dry.

For just a few, Imperial or Hobo oil.

Thats the way I do it too! I hold a rag in my right hand, the hand that works the press lever, and wipe off the neck and shoulder area to avoid any dents. I was less than satisfied with One Shot. Nuff said.................

^^^^^^^^^^ " I was less than satisfied with One Shot."

That pretty much sums up my feelings as well.

The only place I use a dry lube is inside the case neck. A little bit on a Qtip and it stays in place. I use an expander mandrel to set the case neck size and it makes for a slick operation. I have tried it using a std expander plug and it works much better than the graphite stuff you dip the necks in.

I have used One Shot for many years and never had a problem. I have the cases in rows in a tray instead of a loading block. The cases are touching each other and I want them as closely packed as possible to avoid waste. I go up each row on one side then down the rows from the other side. Got the idea from an article by USMC shooting team here on accurateshooter - they do a similar thing with cases in cardboard lids. I spray the cases at about a 45 degree angle from each side. I don't have to wait for them to dry. As soon as I get the rows sprayed I can start re-sizing. I have never sprayed the sizing die. I clean my dies after each session but I have never sprayed lube up inside them before re-sizing. One Shot has no issues from .20 cal up to .338. No sticking, no dents, no problems. I ultrasonic clean all of my brass so I just do a very quick clean after the re-sizing operation and then they are good to go. I really don't see how so many people seem to have problems with it - never had anything close to a problem.

I load the cases on finishing nails on cardboard 252 at a time. Spray on top at a 45, and on all fours sides. Hornady told me you can't use too much, and they said it has Lanolin in it. I just bought lanolin with 91% alcohol. I just learned not to use 70 % alcohol.

I waited the minute and then some.... it doesn't dry even the day after. It dried somewhat, but still builds up in the die. Hornady also said there is no shelf life.

What dry lube do you use in the necks?
When I'm working with freshly cleaned cases I dip the necks in the standard ceramic balls with graphite. I don't know if this helps accuracy or not but it does make a difference on the force gauge when seating bullets.
I use Hornady One Shot if I'm loading bulk ammo on the Dillon. I don't use it for bolt action match ammo because I'm unsure of the effect it will have if it gets into the necks. I used to shoot short range benchrest and one time I got the bright idea of wiping a slight amount of oil on the inside of the necks to get a more uniform seating force. It may have helped seating force but it also helped open up my groups by quite a bit. Since then I'm real careful about what gets on the inside of the necks.

Even though Hornady says their doesn't effect powder or primers I'll still tumble after sizing

Lanolin you can't over lube, and if you under lube, you really can't get a stuck case. I gave up on RCBS lube when I first started to handload. Too many stuck cases for me.

I read the instructions.... They were tacky after I sprayed the cases. The die builds up with lube, with this particular lube and lanolin lube too. Other commercial lubes don't.
