DPMS gen 2

Before the demise of Remington and all of their companies, DPMS had come out with a gen 2 receiver that was according to DPMS much lighter and used more AR15 parts that the standard DPMS version of the AR10 rifle. Is any manufacturer still making this version? Exactly what is the difference and does it really reduce weight as claimed, is there enough of a weight reduction to make it worth while to try and build at this point? If i recall correctly PSA bought the DPMS brand, have they done anything to start making DPMS rifles again, do they plan to??

I have been trying to find out too!!

I contacted PSA and they were no help.

Love my Gen 2.

I have never been able to contact PSA , and ever speak to a human. I would really like to ask some questions about my PSA ar9 and about DPMS.

Here's a few numbers to chew on.

Old style:

Receiver length, 8 15/16"
Upper height, 2.2", there were two heights on the dpms old style, mine is high, but I adjusted the number down to where the low one would be.
Upper thickness, 1.7", and again this will vary a bit, this is the dpms slick side, which is probably one of the fatter ones.
Carbon fiber float tube diameter, 2.1". This is smaller than their aluminum tubes by a good margin, they are 2.25" iirc?
BCG, 1.1" by 8 3/4"

G2:
Receiver length, 8 3/8"
Upper height, 1.9"
Upper thickness, 1.35"
Carbon fiber float tube diameter, 2"
Bcg, .935" by 8 1/4"

ar15:
Receiver length, 7 3/4"
Upper height, 1.85"
Upper thickness, 1.2"
Aluminum float tube diamerter, 2"
Bcg, .935" by 7 1/2"

Here's a visual of the bcg's.

The G2 BCG looks a lot lighter. I only have a few of the G1s, but interested to learn if anyone is still making the G2.

The fastest way to contact PSA is to go to AR15.com, and then the industry section. They answer questions there every few days or so.
It would be nice if one of our members would answer the overall weight difference question for us. The lightest AR10 platform I have run across lately is the P.O.F. version.

Like blue altered said what weight difference can you expect in a lower, Gen ! vs Gen 2. But in my feeble mind that isn't the whole story. Does a gen 2 take a different upper? If it does you would need to know how much the uppers were different. I have never seen anybody mention a gen 2 upper so I "think" they are the same ???

My Gen 2 Hunter with 20" barrel in .308 weighs around 7.5 lbs without scope. The upper is different than a Gen 1/LR as is the barrel extension. Rails and handguards are AR-15 sized.

Guys, it's a completely different upper and lower, bcg (like my pics show). Everything about it is smaller and lighter. It's literally like a lengthened ar15. I don't have a scale for that but the numbers are easy enough to look up.

That was the info i was looking for, that means to me that you not only save weight on the lower but also on the upper. It also tells me that i need to get a complete gun and will not be using any of my parts. Thanks

New to this forum but fwiw we’re a small manufacturer making parts for the Gii format. We’re all about lightweight so we offer titanium pins, bolt catches, mag releases and just recently launched our titanium bcg that shaves about a quarter pound off your cyclic weight.
We’ll eventually have a complete lightweight receiver set and a few other weight saving items.
I wouldn’t want to link to our site without permission, but we’re find-able

You can PM me the website, I won't tell.

For those that are still undecided or thinking about “larger than 556/223“ platforms it might be worth looking into the new Ruger SFAR.

Practically about the only thing the DPMS g1 and g2 share is the name. They are pretty much completely different rifles.

The options to build a G2 aren’t much better than building the new Ruger. (mine is a G1 format, though i think the upper/lower may be Aero)

if you are building a large frame be prepared to discover that things that you didn’t think of being different from the parts you have actually are in fact. (The pivot pin for my bolt release comes to mind)

We're a bit biased toward the Gii small frame, but the Ruger seems to be a nice platform. We haven't gotten our hands on one yet, but we look forward to trying one out.
