Douglas barrels

Thinking of a new barrel for a Savage, are the Douglas barrels any good. They offer a drop in for the Savage in the caliber I want, and i would like to know just how good they are.
I realize it's Ford vs Chevy....not the question I ask. Just quality of Douglas.
Thanks
Ron

Way back when, before all the boutique barrel makers popped out of the woodwork, Douglas was a name to be reckoned with, and will still shoot as good as most...
Not a single maker will guarantee that though ........

Sharp Shooters Supply are Savage specialist and they uses Douglas XX barrels. I have a couple of Fred's barrels and both are extremely accurate.

That's where I was looking, thanks for the link to them though.

I've shot a cr-moly and a stainless Douglas barrel. The stainless barrel outside finish was rough, but that barrel shot sub 1/4moa in 7 WSM, and the cr-moly barrel was on a M1A that was a 1/2 minute gun. I probably wouldn't put one on a benchrest gun, but the ones I shot were better than I am.

Good luck, Tom

I've had 2 issues with Douglas barrels, one they made good on, a 20cal barrel with a belled muzzle end, ie a blunderbuss. It was bought through Brownells so I guess I should say Brownells made good on it. Second was a new 17cal 1-9 barrel. It was a new contoured blank with their headstamp, ie not a used barrel or previously chambered barrel. It was 5-6 years old and was bought from a gunsmith that had bought it and never used it. Still had the brown rustproofing in the bore, no rust, it was a new unchambered barrel. You could not fire a 17 cal bullet through it without it turning into smoke half way to the target. Because I wasn't the original buyer of the barrel there was no way for them to tell it was their barrel, regardless what my smith told them of the headstamp. Basically go pound sand with your new tomatoe stake. Had a similiar incident with an old Shilen blank, they sent a replacement no questions asked.

Let me start by saying that I am no benchrest shooter, as a matter of fact I flat out stink from the bench. I have a Savage Target action in a Master Class prone stock w/barrel nut, attached is a pic of a group shot with Varget and the 107 Sierra from the bench @ 200 yards. Barrel is a Douglas 1-8 SS XX 6 groove .272 no turn

I believe that today's barrels and bullets are so good the the chamber job is now the deciding factor. That's just an opinion, not meant to start a flame.

That's the place Mike. That target was a keeper, went home from there cleaned and prepped the brass and loaded them back up. Ready for spring matches.

Douglas barrels look rougher than factory lapped barrels, but shoot like factory lapped.

Everyone I know that has a Douglas barrel really likes it.

I have not shot any of mine yet.
