Don't laugh... Best printer and paper for printing targets?

Speaking only for myself, and not meaning to come off as snooty, the best printer/paper combo are the ones I have access to. Targets are consumables, to me, so the cheaper-easier to come by, the better. I have gone on line to mytarget.com and printed some theirs. Some will print with 1" square grid...that's kinda handy.

Hope this is of some help. I guess if you have special conditions like wind, rain, etc. my system may not work for you.

I use a good cheap Walmart Cannon. The ink is what can get expensive when you have to refill. For targets I am using at 100 yards I print on the draft setting since it uses less ink; but it is a little faded because of using less ink. I use the regular setting for targets at longer ranges and try to select a target that has some bright colors, like red.

I use card stock and not regular printer paper.

110 lb card stock, use a laser printer for lower cost per unit if you have access to one, if not any ink jet will do. Adobe Illustrator for design, although any word processor or design program will work. All you need are 1", 2" or what ever size circles work for you, printed on a sheet of card stock. Try not to make it into a major project.

100 lbs + or - card stock, have your local print shop them up.
I pay about .30 a sheet, ordering 200 at a time.I get 2 of these per sheet6 br Bat M.jpg
You can't print at home for that$$.

I guess I'll have to actually shoot at the two I printed. I stole the beginnings of this...

...somewhere here, added another row of bulls, resized it to 17X25", and printed it that size on my Epson P800 on InkJetArt Micro Ceramic Luster from here...

At about $2 per sheet plus ink, of course it's foolish economy, especially when Ben Avery Shooting Facility sells excellent 7-bull, 18-1/2x24", thick-buff-colored paper targets for 30 cents. Those I turn into 11-bull targets with the addition of 4 self-adhesive red dots.

My image files are available to anyone who asks via e-mail to jeffreybehr(at)cox(dot)net.

I use regular printer paper when I print my own.

I prefer to use official NRA targets printed on the thick light tan stock. Better holes. For load development, I turn them around backwards and use a sharpie to make Xs about 1" in size for a grid of aiming points. For practice, I use them frontwards and shoot at the normal bullseyes.

I have found that I can design targets that fit my scope's magnifications and reticles, print them on a slightly heavier grade of printer paper, and once I have something that I like, have a whole ream printed on card stock at a local copy center. If I plan on using a couple of different targets, I can print both sides so that there is a different target on each side. I usually have them perforate for a three ring binder while I am at it. This has worked out very well. By customizing my targets, I am able to get a better fit with my reticle, which makes consistent aiming easier. Of course once testing has been done, it is a very good idea to practice using the target that you will use in competition.

Which weight do you use? I've had some home/consumer grade printers that had difficulty feeding card stock.
Here's their note on that below the product descriptions:

"NOTE: The equivalent bond weight is 19# for (P) and 31# for (T)--converted from a typical tag weight of 44# for (P) and 72# for (T). Bond is based on 500 sheets of 17" x 22"; tag is based on 500 sheets of 24" x 36". Bond is the weight basis used for standard reams of copy paper that you buy at the office store. These weights should not be considered exact, and can vary between runs, between manufacturers, and with differences in moisture content."

I use the 8.5x11 target paper (as opposed too the tagboard). I tape it to a backer. The bullet holes are nice and clean.
