Does This Qualify As A Varmint Rig

I did not know if I should post this here, or in the 30 cal or in the general discussion forum, I am going to be using it a varmint rig so that is why I posted it here, I was wondering if anyone else has a large caliber varmint rig and what is the cut off point, here is my latest. I affectionately call it a Varmints Worse Nightmare. it is a Bartlien 300 RUM 17 Twist 30" on a Savage 112 action and Boyds stock and a Swift 8x32-50 scope.

Depends on how field practical it is. If I seen the gun on a shelf, I wouldn't think 'varmint rig'.
For those who 'hunt' varmints, including walking/stalking, it may be too big/heavy. And if varmints are small, it might not be accurate enough off a bipod. The scope is less practical for some varmint hunting. The cartridge is possibly least popular for varmint.

I took a 300 RUM out west with the sole purpose of breaking the long shot record at a large prairie dog ranch.. 1-10'w 190vld and NF NXS 22x npr1 scope added 317yds to it no problem.

It's a nice looking build! What kind of velocity/accuracy are you getting? Looks like it's loaded with 110 grain Vmax bullets. Do they hold together? Do you have a brake on it? A friend of mine has a 300 WSM with a 30" 1-17 Krieger barrel that he uses for rock chucks and prairie dogs. What do you plan to shoot with yours?

To answer your question, yes because IMHO, there is no such thing as overkill.......... That will provide total carnage on any varmint. Good luck with it.

Thanks I have not fired it yet, I have a 300 WinMag with a slow twist and I am getting 4400 FPS with that, and this has 20gr more powder and an even slower twist so who knows, the slow twist will keep those Vmax's together, there are no guarantees on accuracy but I really not worried with this barrel, I am getting one holes with the 300 WM so I expect nothing less from this one, chucks and yotes are on the menu, that and I just love shooting with little to no bullet drop that and the vapor trail is something to see. you don't rally need a brake when shooting light bullets, at least I don't.

On the same note, I can't wait to see how heavy a bullet I can go, and still stabilize them, 150s I am not worried my goal is 168s at close or over 4000 FPS I guess I will find out soon enough.

Very nice rifle there! I have a Rem. Sendero with a standard 1-10 twist and shoot a few rock chucks every year. I have been using a 180 grain Sciracco at 3200 fps. and my buddy uses a 180 grain Nosler with standard twist of 1-10. When they are hit with a 180 grainer there is usually not much left... ;D We have shot out to 600 yards and of coarse we have to spot for each other. Great fun but a bit expensive with over 80 grains of powder for each shot. ;D Looks to me you have a very good set-up there for 30 caliber var-minting! Your going to have to let us know how it shoots.

My varmint and long range hunting gun is a 338 Lapua IMP. with a 36" 1.450 Krieger in a block with an aluminum stock. It has a 5.5x22 Nightforce NXS on top with a 40 minute base. It will reach out there and you can see the hits. Those 300 Bergers really kick up the dirt. It also has a muzzle brake and runs on 6 inch wide rails. It weighs 45 pounds and is a lot lighter then some of my guns so we can carry it in in Deer season. Matt

That brings an interesting question to mind:

Let's say you pack that 45# monster into the hunting area and nail a trophy elk 1000 yards away - DRT. What do you do then?

Option 1:
Pack rifle back to truck, then go get animal.

Option 2:
Pack rifle to animal, figure out you can't carry both, take rifle back to truck then go get animal.

Option 3:
Leave rifle in the field as nobody is gonna steal it - too heavy to run off with. ;D

Heck ya it is a varmint rifle! Fact is, ANYTHING you shoot them with is a varmint gun. It is all in perspective of the varmint...if they have perspective that is!

I use a Sendero 7mm Mag and 150 Grain NBT in front of a pile of 7828 for some long range woodchuck shooting. When I miss, I wait for them to dive in the hole I just made, then I shoot again! 8)

We hunt in small groups so we can glass. When we shoot something we guide somebody in with walkie talkie. Here in Pa. the mountains look totally different when you get over to the deer. You would never find it without someone guiding you in. Matt

I agree with snert here. I use all my guns up to my 338 lapua for prairie dog hunting. I'm putting a 7mm rum together for this purpose as well. If your not hunting for meat or pelts it doesn't really matter at least in my opinion.

that's a sweet rig and I'm sure you will have fun blasting them with that thing!!!

I will venture to say that my 300 WM, with a 30" barrel, and 85gr give or take of RL17 and those Barnes 110gr, are good for 4400 FPS + with excellent groupings, I am sure someone will do the math and say that I am over pressure, hey what can I say, this combo works great in my rig, and I am still here to write about it, that is good enough for me, I just wish they weren't a buck a piece, but they sure are worth it, when the conditions are right the vapor trail alone is worth it.

I think those Swifts are great, they are they only thing that ever lasted on my air rifles, with that double recoil and that is the worst recoil, and I have over a dozen of them on my other center fires, including other RUM and they hold up great, I think they are the best value in scopes going.
