Does anybody still think the 40x is special?

Do any of you know why 40X BRs are marked differently than the other 40Xs? I do, and it is an interesting story.

I hope it wasn’t because they determined that the original marking method was slightly deforming the 40-X’s.

I still get uncomfortable watching the Nightforce representatives beat the scopes at ShotShow and in promo materials. Let those guys that are certain accumulated wear doesn’t apply to scopes, and “it’s all good” - personally buy more than 20 of them, hoping they are right for the next 40 years of ownership. (I don’t want to buy the airplane wing either, that was bent on a test bed to 150% maximum load to prove the design).

I saw a program long ago about tracing a firearm with the serial number intentionally removed, at least attempted. They somehow could discern the numbers based on deep metal displacement.

It reminded me how a button rifled barrel can end up looking like a candy cane on the outside. Enormous PSI at play in the process that dwarfs firing a bullet.

Yes I think they are special.
Maybe not because of the receiver.
My stocks ar Macmillan that are glass bedded.
But the barrels are heavier than stock 700s. They are button rifled and hand lapped. I know because I visited the Custom Shop and saw them do it. The triggers are from good to great. I have no others to compare to my 3 40x’s. The 308 and 223 are 40XC-KS
Groups from the 308 @200 and the 223@100

ln 1993 l retired and always wanted a 40X. With my retirement bonus my plan was to GET one. Things didn't go quite like l planned with that BONUS. Fast forward to 2024 l found a 40X that was made in 1993! Some folks say, ''Better Late Than Never''. At 78 its almost too late. My ''Retirement Gun'' from 1993 is one in 223Rem, 27'' stainless barrel, Kevlar stock with blued receiver. lt weighs in @12.6 lbs. lts been to the range twice. lt came with the factory box, test target too! To answer the question, YES, MY 40X is very SPECIAL!

I ended up with my 40X action on a whim when I was buying 1500+ bullets from an older Palma shooter who was getting out of sling shooting.
The receiver had been faced with a pinned recoil lug, but don't know of anything else done to it.

It sat in a drawer for a year and I finally put it into an Eliseo stock for Palma shooting, where it quickly became my favorite rifle. It can clean all of the various sling targets for me with good x counts and I'm working through my third barrel on it now. My home range is Ben Avery and while I've looked at Barnards and Bordens the sand and dust here would make me cringe if I owned one.

Gorgeous rifle man!

Don’t know about the 40x, but I have a 722 I turned into a single shot with a custom fit aftermarket one piece bolt with PPC face and Mini-16 extractor, bottom safety Jewell trigger, 3” BR stock, and Shilen Select ratchet barrel chambered in 243 LBC Turbo-40. Action is timed to the trigger and locks up tighter than Fort Knox when in battery.

Actually thinking about selling it. If anyone is interested, shoot me a PM. Have brass, dies and reamer. Barrel only has 50 rounds in it so not even broke in yet.

That is a really nice looking bed job.
