Does anybody still think the 40x is special?

2 cents worth
as a mag fed.naw useless
as a single shot a good starting point
if the price is right, has a usable stock and maybe a trigger bit not likely.
heavy for a hunting rifle, not accurate enough for small group competition,
as a "fun target" rifle, not bad

My 40X's were never 1/4 minute rifles in stock form. My 6x47 was a 3/8 agg shooter on good days. It would, of course, produce the occasional sub 1/4 group. This was stock, except for bedding. Later on, restocked and re-barreled, it would agg in the low 2's under match conditions. On calm days, in practice, I could stay in the ones. In the late seventies, this wasn't bad shooting.
One of my better 40X's was a 10 1/2 pound 308. I could never agg under 1/4 with it but I did come close and once had a low-2's agg going then blew it with one shot in the last group. The recoil always got to me sooner or later with this one.
When I bought my first 40X, it cost me about 400 bucks which, at that time, was about ten days pay for a sawmill worker. About 2800 of todays dollars, I reckon. The new 24 Leupold scope was 125.00. WH
About 5 years ago I called Remington’s Custom shop to inquire about getting a 40XBR in 222 , they quoted me $3800 and 6 months. I found two 1970’s, same gun but wood stocks in near unfired condition for just over $3K.

As mentioned above the first 40X came off the line in 1955. I have 2 custom tincan shooters built on 40x RF receivers. One is built off the 722. I also have a M40 in 308 with the clip slot.

I have a prototype that doesn't have the 40x marking. Got it from an old br shooter that shot in the famous warehouse shootings. I think he got it straight from Mike Walker. At some time, he had a Davidson cone bolt made for it. Shoots great with every barrel I ever put in it. Remington verified it as a 40x but the serial number. It's as slick as any custom action made today.
I have one of those actions also. No markings, just the serial number!. Great little action. Changed bolt with a PTG coned bolt.

I have mentioned before in about 1994 Red Cornelison gave me a 40X receiver that was RB-left port to take to the Crawfish Shoot to give to a Texas shooter. Frank Wilson maybe?? Red said that only 3 or 4 were built.
Wow that’s interesting. Can you post a pic?

I just know I've had two 700 Rems. (22-250, 223) and one 40X (222) and that gopher over yonder should be plenty nervous. I don't shoot competition, I just kill gophers. My longest shot was made with a custom 25-06 M-70 Win (built in mid 1960s) at just over 500 yards. Lots of good shooting newer rifles, improvements to technology, bullets, plastic stocks and machining, but still much enjoyment is still available in the old stuff.

I always thought the 40X was just a regular 700 receiver without the magazine cut-out. Now I see there are 40X repeater receivers. So, in a nutshell what is the difference with a 700?

Essentially no difference in the repeater receivers, but generally much better barrels and better stocks. As noted earlier, the 40X repeaters that had .308 bolt face calibers were normally clip slotted and those in suitable calibers were used in XC matches.

This 40X just sold for a very good price on GB. add taxes and handling. Workmanship, I call it very good value. Will it win a BR event? 1 in 50?. But a damn good, high quality rifle all things considered. So the 40X is still special in my opinion. And this only applies to older, nicely made, 40X. You can't put a rifle together for the same money that will shoot as good.
And had it not been on GB, I would have paid higher for it.
