Does 223 Wylde as a chamber matter that much?

Looking at buying one of Wilson combat's 16" fluted recon barrels. They're chambered in 556 vs 223 Wylde. If you're using handload 223s in a 556 chamber is there any noticeable difference vs 223 Wydle? my understanding is the main difference in 223 vs 556 is the free bore length. I was reading the barrel itself is more important than the chamber?

I've shot plenty of 223 through a M4 GI 556 spec barrel over the years with ammo and always considered a tad bit less accurate, then again it could just be the ammo I was using before I started reloading.

Just wondering if anyone's noticed any discernable difference?

Nope, not much they both Wylde, & .5.56 NATO chambers accept 5.56 ammo... with the Wylde if I rember correctly, has a more gentle lead in angle and slightly smaller throat dia, and slightly less jump to the rifling, for better claimed accuracy. And all 3 chambers will accept commercial 223 Rem ammo. I choose Wylde or Nato chambers for all 5.56 auto loaders...never a 223 Rem chamber, for my use. But a strictly varmint auto loading rifle with a 12 twist for light short varmint bullets, might find more accuracy for that particular application with a 223 chamber, and not interested in shooting long heavy bullets or milspec ammo in his rifle.

If you're going to be feeding from a magazine, Compass Lake has a chamber that can handle 556 loads and is supposed to be slightly more accurate than Wylde for mag loaded rounds.
As mentioned, 223 SAAMI is probably better for lighter bullets.

But, unless you're planning to shoot benchrest, they all are about the same [with the caution that 223 chambers could experience too much pressure with rounds loaded for 556]

223/5.56 chamber dimensions is a rabbit hole you may not want to crawl into. I have 6 different reamers. The best thing to do is get the prints for the verions you are interested in and see what the differences are. Then pick the one that fits what you are trying to do.

I have one of their barrels in Wylde and I've been very pleased with it. It shoots amazing, but I have other barrels in 5.56 that also shoot amazing.

The main reason the Wylde chamber came out was so you could safely shoot the 5.56 military ammo in it, without the possible pressure bump you would get in a standard 223 Rem chamber. This was due to most all 223 rem ammo makers advising to not shoot 5.56 (military) in that chamber. I think they did this for libability issues.

where ammo was single loaded long (80 gr sie at 2.45x oal) for 600 yd target shooting. a regular chamber will not do this. the design allows cmp/dcm accuracy with lighter shorter rounds that are shot at 200/300 yards.

Just go to Wilson Combats site and look at the official statement from Bill Wilson on his 223 Wylde chambers...they will indeed take Milspec Nato ammo...kinda like I said ...but don't take my word for it...go to the source...the barrel maker and his reamers. I use theirs barrels along with others, and they work with Mil Spec ammo...as many barrel makers claim.

An 80 grain SMK will work fine in a shorter chamber by just seating the bullet a bit deeper.

Yep, I run 95 SMK out of a modified mag, cut the brass back ..040" ...just to see what was possible in an AR ..got a new experimental 6 twist to try out. ...and new hybrid cases with SS case heads capable of running over 80,000 psi, for another project. Soon as the weather improves.

Wrong. I shot lots of 80 SMKs before the Wylde was created.

I googled this the last time the subject came up and from a casual observer it appears the shoulder of the Wylde is a couple thousandth larger as well.

In my mind it makes little practical difference. Are you loading longer match grade bullets which benefit from more free bore? I think either could be a good choice, depending on how you use it. If you are shooting light (relatively speaking) varmint bullets, free bore might not be your friend. Shoot both with your loads and see what works best for you.
