Do you chamfer the bore-crown intersection?

Ive always left a sharp edge where the bore meets the crown but lately ive been noticing some really good shooting rifles that have a 45 deg chamfer at this intersection.

What do you do, and why?

I for one, never touch the crown after the initial really slow, lots of oil, cut with a HHS cutter.
A nice sharp release is a good thing in my mind....

I only do the a very fine 45° cut that is barely deeper than the lands. More to prevent possible damage from cleaning than anything else otherwise I wouldn't bother.

I would think a greater angle ( 135 vs 101 ) would be slightly more durable, and i would imagine a cleaning jag would ride over the chamfered edge a little easier too.

Not to say im gonna change my ways, just trying to broaden my perspective.

Either way you do it, make sure you are centered to start and run a Q-tip around the finished product. It should not pick up any cotton ......

Good question! I think many gun smiths practice different techniques. Like stuff you put in chili. We can go back and forth several times on why what and where but I think the most important factor is the crown be square to the bore with a clean sharp edge like Dusty said.

I put a 45 degree chamfer and then polish with extra fine cratex. The chamfer is to prevent damage from cleaning rods. The barrels shoot great with just about any decent crown, so do whatever gives you warm fuzzies ;) Just make sure it's burr-free.
