Do it yourself Stock making thread

That is a beautiful looking stock. I've not messed with much teak, but cocobolo has always given me difficulties. E

I bought a teak board, sandwiched some walnut in between and ran it thru the duplicator. Glad I wore a respirator! The dust stuck to my sweaty skin and I got a rash! Gotta be careful with some woods!

Clamps? is there some pics in here of clamped up blanks? I am enclosing one i did today along with using up what was left of my gallon of titebond. reason im enclosing pic is to show my poor selection of clamps and hoping to see some people are using i can get. thanks Josh.

I use the same style of clamps but use 2 bits of 6 inch x 2 inch rhs. Put the stock inbetween and clamp together. Yes Josh some timber give horrible side effects when being machined . Didn't realise till after I had machined some beef wood that i was allergic to it . Its part of the graveliar family of trees. Broke out in rash all over and face ended up like a balloon. So no longer use it for stocks or anything at all.

I use a lot of clamps but I lay out my stock on the blank and in the cut away areas I bolt it together with 3/8 carriage bolts. My blanks usually start as 2 1x8's so there is a lot of extra space for bolts. I had a red oak stock open up on me once but not since I bolted them together.

good idea - mine usually start as a rectangle like 71/2 x 42 - 3 3/4 pieces so id have plenty room to do that. i cut this one down before gluing to save glue- lol- still plenty room

i used to use little blocks under the clamps- hard to hold it together when clamping— bigger sheets woud prob work better. i clean some glue off before it dries. dont wanna cover it up

Yeah the epoxy is use loves sticking to steel aswell. But have a good chisel removes it easy enough . Wnt be glueing many stock up anymore as the fudds are taking away our enjoyments of shed time.

I think I just realized what’s slowing you down. You need a good work table!! It helps focus the mind as the center of creativity. I have two that are close to each other. One at standing height and one at sitting height and they’re the center of activity. It’s where I can get in the “zone”.

You’ve got that right. I started rolling with the stock for the Tikka, a few weeks ago. Now I have 4 more blanks roughed in and another 2 ready for the duplicator.

work tables are important for sure- i have a few in there. my main work table is 4 x 8 and sure is the center of activity. usually not much room on there to work. i think im an ADHD anyway. scatter brained—. never seems to be enough room in the shop nor on the tables. Im thinking of getting rid of some of the junk. when you get in the zone things get done thats for sure. with me not so much— good 2 hear from you

those look like my clamps!! if thats a stock blank though i dont quite see how its clamped
edit- oh now i see it- mabie you are clamping strips on the side?

your table looks nice and flat—- mine isnt- i think thats why i stared using the saw for glueing stuff. need to fix the table for sure.

Here’s my work center:


The blank in the clamps. 3/8” strips outside a 1 1/2” center. The inside piece is bland with a few knots. The white boards protect the walnut from clamp damage.


This one is promising. I split the board because it wasn’t thick enough. Thin strips in the center.
