Do it yourself Stock making thread

My wife feels your pain Josh as she's my full time career. I'm just glad I can still do a bit around the place in-between falling over and other crap that happens to my body. That stock is coming along nicely . I havnt had the privilege of doing a mini inlet yet . Mostly doing howa short actions,Remington and Barnard job here. But make a few rails for most actions these days . Will be glad when I have my cnc router up and going things will mite be a bit easier than or not.

Thanks! We’ve hired two girls to help out, one day each a week, so I can do “Guy stuff”. Being in the shop keeps me within calling distance.
I understand where you are coming from. Wife's health isn't very good. It requires a lot but well worth it for not only because she is my wife, but my best friend too. Part of getting older.
God Bless!

I have been inspired…….not sure how it will look when done but myself and my dad decided to build a couple short range benchrest rifles for U.B.R. And figured we’d give stock building a try. I had some old (from 40’s) walnut and some cherry so decided to give it a shot…..just getting started but enjoying it so far.
Thank you to this community what you create and the knowledge you freely share with us is truly amazing and provides me with the confidence I might actually be able to make this work.

Was finally able to get back to work on this and made a little progress today with dad’s help…..probably more like he made some progress with my help. Still have a ways to go but getting closer.

Looks good! It’s nice that you and your Dad are doing it together.
Yesterday, I routed an 1/8” off the sides of the action area, using a core box bit at the transition to the wider fore arm. Then I put a 3/8” round on the bottom of the front and a 22.5 degree cut on the top. That left a transition I had to sand by hand.
Edit: The misalignment of the side cuts was fixed.

I spent today rounding off some corners and shaping mine. I used a palm sander with 120, then 220 grit. Then I attached the butt pad and set the grip cap in some thickened epoxy. I do my tips a little differently. I route a channel for a center piece and epoxy pieces to the outside of it. Finding blocks of ebony is near impossible, these days.

Josh if you send it to Brett you probably wnt get it back either . Yes do it yourself is so much more fun .
1. I like building these stocks. It’s a challenging hobby.
2. Mailing things is iffy and expensive, these days. It might get lost or broken.
3. I figure Brett is backed up with turning out those works of art. This stock is for a cheap Howa mini that’ll sit in a safe or get scratched up in the brush. It isn’t worthy of Brett’s work.
4. I’m doing an Epoxy finish with my rotisserie gizmo. The results might be pretty good.
Worth a try!

Dnt get me going about postal service. Can get stuff posted to me quick from 1 side of the country than from our local city which is only a 4 hour drive down the road . Go figure and the other side of the country is 3700kms aways .

Response in order of appearance
1, it is fun and each project has its own set of challenges
2, Pirate Ship account, print your own lables. Im shipping 5 units today cost under $130 and I ship 3 day UPS priority.
I figure less time in system is less time to get lost or damaged.
3, Yes I pretty much stay busy, but work all projects into rotation when they arrive.
To me the artwork is in the stock both by the grain that God created, and the craftsmanship that went into making it.
" I'm just a painter, not a magician or artist!"
4, your work is beautiful and I'm sure it will be badass once finished.

Brett: Someday I will find a beautiful hunk of wood and carefully carve up something special. That will get sent to you and I’ll finally own some of your work! Most of my work is what I consider utilitarian.
I liked the way this one turned out and have wanted to try it again. This time I’ll leave it “high gloss”.

Hey brother all my work is utilitarian. Lol
I had a fella reach out for some paint work, he told me his rifle is a tool and he throws it in his truck with little regard.
I told him maybe he ought to get some spray max and finish it himself that I wasn't the guy for him. Lol
