Die that seats off ogive

Paging Mr. F Guffey....white courtesy telephone please......
So, you are OK with no standards for names, terms and conventions relating to arms and ammo. And enjoy berating someone who clarifies their meanings in what they say.

Coarse. Or fine. Whatever.

I agree, but according to SAAMI, "seating depth" means how deep in the necks a bullet is seated

Well that is what you are changing when you change seating depth. Never said your definition was incorrect. But it doesn't really matter how they lay out the terminology definitions as long as a person understands whats going on in relation to the lands.

So I shot all 4 groups ealier this week. I fired 3 shot groups, then took one of each charge weight and performed a ladder test at the end.

All groups were under 1/2" at 100 yards except for the one with the bullet that had the ogive out of spec. Coincidence? I don't think so. Group was 2 rounds in one hole and the third with the out of spec bullet flew south about 5/8".

I just re-mounted the scope afyer bedding the rings to the base so i had to sight in again. I boresight by looking down the barrel at my target at 100 yards. Fire a round, then a second one to confirm impact. Hold center and dial the reticle to the holes, fire a third round to get on center. Done. I then dial one MOA left so my groups don't covery up the center aiming point on the target. Even the sighters on a cold bore were shooting sub 1/2 MOA.

Next is the ladder test target, which is the only one that really matters anyhow. My normal load is 76.5gr of RL-16 with the 250gr Berger EH. Shot 1/4 MOA with .2gr more charge and .2gr less charge. Pretty good for a large magnum hunting rifle.

.4gr more gave me a little vertical, but still pretty good.

The rifle.

Do they make a die that will seat off ogive of specific caliber or is this the wrong thing to do? Wouldn't this be a faster way of coming up with your OAL especially when using a micrometer seating die? Or is it apples to apples

There was a time before the Internet and before most members started reloading that Herter made universal seating dies. They made one die body and a lot of seater plugs. I have the RCBS organizer for seating plugs, every compartment has a different seater plug, there is nothing written on the box that says I have to use one or the other.

My cheap and easy fix to have the seater die contact the ogive closer to the full diameter was to use a larger caliber seating plug. Ie 257 cal for 224 bullets. Bedding for exact bullet is probably the most perfect way if one can get the bullet exactly centered in the bedding material.

how do you put a 25 cal seater plug in a 224 die? which die are you talking about?
