seating die that registers at ogive?

So if I go to the trouble of measuring my OAL with a stoney point comparator, and my seating die still seats by pushing against the bullet tip, what have I gained?

I have to set my dies to seat the bullets long, then adjust every bullet to matching length at the ogive.

Is there a seating die that registers at the ogive? The Redding competition micrometer seating dies with the sliding sleeve, do they register on the ogive?

I'm not sure what you mean by "register on the ogive", but none of the better seating dies contact the tip - they contact a point on the surface on the ogive (which is a fairly long surface).

If the bullet tips are bottoming out in the seater stem, drill it deeper so the stem contacts the ogive before it has a chance to bottom out on the tip of the bullet. VLD bullets are famous for that as well as a few others. ;)

+1

Been there done that and it works.

If I understand want you're asking, if the seater pushes on the ogive close to the bearing surface (where your comparator reads) the the bullet will engrave into the seater & will stick in the seater. That's why the push on the ogive close to the meplat.

Yeah, this has been with hunting VLD's that I noticed the issue.
I'm using Redding or RCBS standard seating dies in 284win, 270win.

I wont be afraid to drill out the seater cone a little.

What dies already accommodate the long-nose VLD?

Some seater dies won't work with the longer "pointed" bullets. "Special ordered" seater stems are available to correct that problem.
OR, just drill it a little deeper and you're in business. ;)

Some folk make a "custom" seat stem by putting hot glue in the stem, then seating a bullet...makes for a nice fit.

You do this once, with one bullet, and the rest of your same bullets seated at that setting should measure right with your comparator. Check every one to make sure.
If they don't, you have other issues still to work out.
Heavy barrel is right. Seater stems need to contact lower on a bullet noses than comparators(which could be anywhere).

Buy one from Don Nielsen, "The pumpkin", the same guy that makes the "Pumpkin neck turner.
His does not sit on your bullet point , but around the ogive. a bit pricey, but a one time buy.

Redding Competition Seating Die. From Redding's website-
To hold the bullet concentrically, the Bullet Alignment Bore and the Seating Stem have been honed and ground to virtually the same diameter as a jacketed bullet.

This comment is about the diameter of the bore, the diameter of the bullet, and the EXTERNAL diameter of the seating stem, all needing to be the same - it is not discussing the seating cup or seater's contact point on the bullet.

DMoran is correct. Redding came out with a VLD seating stem specifically designed to prevent the Berger VLDs from bottoming out/ hitting the tips of the VLD bullets when being seated. I use the VLD stems exclusively now.
