Dewey rod stuck (& removed)...left nylon in barrel

Hoz,
I'm here...I've ordered a endoscope camera and am awaiting it to arrive. I tried cleaning it again this past weekend and did not move. I tried Bore Tech Eliminator which removed all kinds of blue (copper) as well as used the Gunslick foam cleaner. I used a nylon brush and it did not remove all of it. From the naked eye, it appears to have caked on the lands. The more I look at it and think about it, I don't think it's nylon in the bore. I'm really beginning to wonder if it's carbon. However, why in front of the DI hole? I did speak to Dewey and they mentioned that it nylon was scraped off of the rod, it should not adhere to the bore.

Once I have the camera, I'll have a better idea what's going on. I'll post findings when I know something.

If it were my problem I would turn a threaded plug ( sharply faced off ) the diameter of the bore for shaving the material off the top of the lands and use heat and a bronze brush for cleaning out the grooves.

I'm back with results. I believe the $10 5mm endoscope camera was the best money spent as there is no guessing now. It's no Hawkeye but it's also not the price. However, it gave me what I needed to know.

The verdict is that I have heavy copper fouling about 1-2" from the end of the muzzle. I don't understand why I'm seeing it here as it's nowhere else in the barrel. I'm wondering if the barrel has some rough spots in that area past the DI hole. Anyway, I have attached some pics.

Now, what is the best way to remove it? I bought some Boretech Eliminator but others have stated that KG-12 is the best solution to attack copper. I might just leave the foaming cleaner in the bore over night and see what it does.

Many of us that shoot the 50 Cals use Aqueous Ammonia (straight) for getting copper out of our barrels. It is stronger than the over the counter cleaners. Just make sure you remain up wind and outdoors when/if you use it. It WILL get ALL copper out of your barrel.

JB it with a brass jag with a patch over it.

That makes more sense if you don't want to use ammonia use some Montana extreme copper cleaner it has ammonia and make sure you're well ventilated like the other guy said. It's hard for me to tell from the pics but the color looks more yellow like mabie a cleaning rod jag somehow or a lite fast bullet in a fast twist could start coming apart in the barrel or since its in front of the gas port mabie the hole is rough where the drill came through mabie it came through on top of a land or even partially on a land nod groove. Could be tearing the bullets or lots of different things. I'd use some iosso and an oversize nylon brush and scrub it and see what happens.

I would suggest Bore Tech Cu+ rather than Eliminator. Eliminator is a combo of the Carbon remover and the Copper remover.
I also suggest scrubbing the bore with JB bore paste. I used to have to do that before I discovered Bore Tech CU+

Certainly you want to remove the copper, which will probably be more difficult due to the extreme thickness of what is there. Others have mentioned several possibilities to try. More importantly, you need to figure out what is causing it to copper up at the muzzle. As you noted, any rough spots earlier in the bore need to be addressed, or the copper problem may only get worse.

Call Dewey and ask him what to do!!! You may be pleasantly surprised at the response. You are probably not the only one to do that.

What cal rod were you using??

Was cleaning from the breech end with Dewey bore guide. I don't clean anything from the muzzle and don't own any lever actions, other autos, etc. which would require this. It was the correct 36C-22 rod from Dewey. I believe the rod was slightly bent unbeknownst to me when I started using it. I would feel it get tight about 2" from the muzzle. This was prior to using Gunslick foaming bore cleaner. I then squirted foaming bore cleaner in the bore and waiting an hour. When I pushed the rod down the bore this time, it was really stuck. I ended up using pliers on the end of a rod and hammered backwards to get it out. The rod came out. I then used a second 36C-22 I had and noticed a "tight spot" about 1-2" from the muzzle. Upon looking in the muzzle with a flashlight, I can see what appears to be buildup on the lands. I've tried bore brushed, Butches, etc. and nothing is cleaning it off.

I've used Dewey rod 20 years. I've never had this issue with nylon coating coming off the rod. However, when the Gunslick was introduced to the bore, it caused the rod to act very "sticky" to the bore. I'll call Dewey Monday to see what they recommend. I can't imagine what else would be in front of the DI port in the barrel if it's not carbon or copper. Patches are coming through clean except for raised area in lands.
Dewey for a bit now , has recommended .20 caliber rods for use in .22 just for future reference.. Becouse of the .22 rod doing this or rubbing..

Could you leave a link or say we're you picked up the camera? Thanks..

If you are really serious about getting the copper out get some Barnes CR-10. I have found it to be more potent than all of the other products I have tried, and it works FAST. It even immediately attacks brass cleaning accessories (ask me how I know!). But that won't fix the rough spot in the bore... Will have to see how it shoots, it may still be OK...
