Dewey rod stuck (& removed)...left nylon in barrel

I was cleaning up my WOA barrel on my AR15 today when it became (very) stuck about 1 inch from the muzzle. After trying to pull it backwards with no resolution, I resorted to a rubber mallet and hitting vice grips on the end of the rod. This allow me to move the rod backwards from the muzzle.

However, after removing the rod, I noticed I had a thick layer of black gunk on the lands about 1-2" from the muzzle. In looking at the rod, it appears the coating sheared from the rod and was left in the barrel. I have tried scrubbing it with Butch's Bore Shine and a brass brush and it's not cutting it. When running a patch down this area, it feel rough. This is past the DI hole which I have felt it grab a patch as well.

What can I used to chemically remove the nylon from the lands? Also, will this bulge my barrel if I shoot it or will it swage the bullet?

were you cleaning from the muzzle end of the bbl.?????....Roger

Was cleaning from the breech end with Dewey bore guide. I don't clean anything from the muzzle and don't own any lever actions, other autos, etc. which would require this. It was the correct 36C-22 rod from Dewey. I believe the rod was slightly bent unbeknownst to me when I started using it. I would feel it get tight about 2" from the muzzle. This was prior to using Gunslick foaming bore cleaner. I then squirted foaming bore cleaner in the bore and waiting an hour. When I pushed the rod down the bore this time, it was really stuck. I ended up using pliers on the end of a rod and hammered backwards to get it out. The rod came out. I then used a second 36C-22 I had and noticed a "tight spot" about 1-2" from the muzzle. Upon looking in the muzzle with a flashlight, I can see what appears to be buildup on the lands. I've tried bore brushed, Butches, etc. and nothing is cleaning it off.

I've used Dewey rod 20 years. I've never had this issue with nylon coating coming off the rod. However, when the Gunslick was introduced to the bore, it caused the rod to act very "sticky" to the bore. I'll call Dewey Monday to see what they recommend. I can't imagine what else would be in front of the DI port in the barrel if it's not carbon or copper. Patches are coming through clean except for raised area in lands.

Before trying all the above, try to find some one in your area with a bore scope and see what the problem is and go on from there. In stead of running around in circles.

Tipton graphite rods, tossed all my deweys.
Some say Tipton CF rods the best thing since sliced bread........unless your unlucky enough to have one that breaks off at the handle or get one that has a bow in it. I don't like the odds......I've seen what happens to your hand when the handle breaks on the push stroke.

Something just doesn't seem right about this. It seems the rod would have to be really really bent to actually cause something like this. I've pushed many tight patches down bores and really bowed some rods but never stripped the coating off one. Thuds advice is good Id look it over good with a borescope. I wonder if something was/is in the bore and caused the coating to strip off the rod. doesn't seem the coating would be that bonded to the barrel. Have you seen that rifled bore jag advertised here- that might work. Keep us informed.

Wow - never heard of this before - I've used Dewey coated rods for 30+ years in a bunch of different cailbers and never had the coating peel off. I guess stainless would eliminate any possibility of this but putting a stainless rod down my match barrels even with a bore guide gives me the hives.

Would like to hear more about what the poster finds out. I would think if the rod is bent in wouldn't feed even at the breech. I also use Dewey bore guides and the 224 guide is very small in diameter. I would think a bent rod would not feed through it or at least he would have detected a problem before pushing the rod through the barrel. Very strange.

Make a funnel and tube arrangement and pour boiling water down the barrel immediately followed by a bronze brush. Blow any water out afterwards with compressed air.

Back about 15 plus years ago they had some issues with the coating i had two a .17 and .20 that the coating peeled off my .224 still going strong. When contacted i had two new ones in a hurry was told to keep or throw the old ones out and was given an apology. My new .20 peeled off alittle then stopped so ive kept using it, as it was minor.Never used anywild solvents except the usual stuff(butches, hoppes etc)

If you are sure it's part of the nylon from the rod then experiment with various heat and chemicals on the remaining rod to see what softens or dissolves the nylon, THEN try it in the barrel.
Assuming it's not an SBR(short barreled rifle) AR where the gas port is near the end of the barrel ??

You might also try to soak with Kroil. Not sure if it would be beneficial but Kroil does have a ways of getting under things.

Its a shame you don't know someone with an ultrasonic cleaner. That would possibly get it to release.
