Deer rifle bullet question

just spit balling here and typing numbers into a ballistics calculator, but a 100-108 grain bullet from a 6mm such as a 6 creed will have more energy and velocity at 500 than a 308 shooting 125gr bullet?

In this instance you're using a Heavy for caliber bullet (100-108 6mm) and a light for caliber (125 in 308) as a comparison That's not a valid point. If you compared like BCs and Sectional densities it would be a better comparison.

Wanting to build a 308 win for this coming deer season. Id like it to have a 20in barrel. Not a hiking rifle, but I'll be in treestands some
times. But I like to hunt from the ground whenever possible.

I will have the opportunity to take 450-500 yard shots max. I was hunting with a 6.5 grendel last year and a beautiful buck came out at about 400 yards, and I couldnt ethically let one rip from that distance.

Just out of curiosity. At 500 yards for a deer bullet, would you choose fast with low BC, like a 125-150 grain that you can get screaming out of a 20 inch, or somthing slower, but with better BC like in the 168 grain and up?

OR

Would you choose a different caliber all together?
If you are planning to use a lighter-weight bullet the Nosler 125 B T or A B would be a good choice. A couple of powders listed in the Nosler manual will move them along the lane smokin @ better than 3000 fps probably even with the shorter barrel.

A 165gr bullet...pick one out of a 20" barrel will kill ANY deer well at 500...period. I know this for a fact..I have done this..not once or twice.... a whole bunch more than that. Always going to be some opinion on whatever bbl length... velocity etc.... I default to Jack O'conners response to a lot of statements " and exactly how do you know that to be true?'... SHOOT ALOT at the range you intend to take a shot at a deer at...Period... Shoot a 26" bbl .308 next to a 20" bbl .308 Next to a 24" 30-06.... wont be enough difference for most people to know the difference at 500 yards...deer wont either... A 165 speer BTSP works well if it shoots in your gun.

I will throw my rustic choice in the pot.

I would choose a 165 gr Nosler Partition and zero it at 150 yards.

Try out the 165 Gr TGK Gamechanger from Sierra, you won't be disappointed. I've yet to see a deer make it more than 20 yards at any distance with this combo out of a 18" & 22" barreled .308. I've used many combo of bullets to kill deer out of this caliber for close to 35 years and settled in on a gameking (HPBT) about 10 years ago. When they came out with the Gamechanger, I figured what the heck and boy will they put a deer in the dirt quick without wrecking everything inside.

Your 20" barrel will be just fine, if it has the accuracy. After shooting or being in the company of shooters using the Berger Elite Hunter/Classic Hunter line of bullets bang/flop over 75 North American and African game, Berger's are my suggestion. Pay attention to energy at the distance you plan to shoot, my rule of thumb is 1000 ft/lbs of energy is needed for ethical hunting. Good Luck!

With experience in the 6.5 world already you could go to the 260 or 6.5x55. They have the advanced BC bullets and the case capacity to push the 120s to 3,200 and a 140 to 3,000. The accuracy is near legend.

I can’t. But the rest of the world can.
Interesting - I must be in an alternate universe because the vast majority of guys I encounter at the two ranges where I am a member couldn't hit an 8" steel plate at 200 yards if you moved them off the bench. ;)

However, I'll take your word for it because you must have witnessed this at the ranges you visit. ;)

I believe Tommie was simply being facetious. But in the real world I don't know what the actual numbers are but there are those that can. Practice like you play.

Then I probably should include the condition of 'hung over' to my practice. The night before opening day seems to be an interesting one at my deer camp :)

But if you ask them over the internet they can hit the same 8" plate at a 1000 yards every time and probably standing shooting free hand.

A accurate rifle with proper bullet placement is key, especially when shooting at range.a 308 is more than enough gun.most hunting bullets, light or heavy in the right place will do the job.i shoot most of my deer these days with a 6.5x47.ive shot lots of deer with a 6BR also.no problems at all.
