Normally target bullets shouldn't be used for hunting due to unreliable expansion.
Checkout how the new 6mm DTAC 115gr with Noseringtm can be more accurate for target shooting and expand reliably for long range hunting.

The creation of the Noseringtm application was a direct result from hunting experiences of which many excellent impacts “Ran Off” as the result of a nonexpanding DTAC bullet which has virtually no catalyst (other than hitting a bone) to initiate repeatable expansion. This resulted in experimentation using several different approaches with a goal of modifying these very accurate bullets in a way so as to create decisive expansion upon impact.

There were other benefits from cutting a Noseringtm on a DTAC bullet. These include increased uniformity of the drag coefficients not only during supersonic flight but also subsonic velocities.

Our feedback data speaks for itself; Not only does Nosering™ make your DTAC bullet deliver better shot to shot drag uniformity , which results in your vertical groups becoming smaller, but it also allows you to initiate expansive qualities. Takes a great target bullet and makes it a fantastic hunting bullet.

The DTAC with a with its Closed Nose (pointed tip) will show better shot to shot drag uniformity which will translate into smaller vertical group(s).

For a target shooter this means your DTAC group(s) will become flatter since your specific lot # of bullets that can be characterized as brothers and sisters will after a Nosering™ react more like identical twins. A Nosering™ will result in the bullet BC spreads being cut in half.

The Noseringtm tool allows the hard bullet jacket tip to fail due to stress fracturing on impact and which is driven into the lead core of the bullet. This initiates dramatic bullet expansion.

So is that a fmj bullet with a cut in the jacket? And its open back exposed core like other fmj bullets i guess? (Pictures arent very good)

So... In layman's terms, cutting a ring into the bullet makes BC more uniform? Is this now being marketed as a target bullet suitable for hunting or a hunting bullet suitable for targets?

I'm guessing the former. Heavy for caliber bullets with high BCs are generally appeal to the target shooters.
With the tip modification now those people who were hunting with them and losing game can try something new. Probably a small group of people to be sure. Per their statement, the ring improves shot to shot BC variables resulting in less vertical variance.

Yea that picture confused me too. The back is a rebated boat tail so the picture you are referring to is likely one of the tip with the tip removed. On impact the tip is supposed to be driven into the core made possible the by the frangible nature of tip after getting a nosering

He's been farting with bullet ringing for awhile.
I shot some of his 115 with the closed tips and while I could get really good
groups, I'd get the occasional flyer. So I quit using them. A problem many others experienced also.
I think he's hoping that the ring helps this out.
I've seen a video somewhere it shows the pressure waves with and without the ringing.

For some reason when I read this on his website I thought the closed tip gave the better uniformity, rereading it above they imply the nosering gets the credit. I also wonder if the ring-shaped dents I make sometimes will affect uniformity? I usually use them to warm up the barrel.

interesting-- At first I thought it was going to be a nose ring like my youngest girlfriend has:cool:

How about some pictures of bullets shot and expanded? You do any testing of this theory? Actual shot bullets pics would be nice to see.
I'm only shooting Fclass with them.

Tonight's match the first 10 bare DTACs scored 98 with no Xs.
2nd 10 were HBN coated DTACs with "X-Ring" aka NoseringTM.
Those shot 100 with 8Xs.

I'll need to coat some normal DTACs with HBN to make it a single variable experiment for next time but for now I'm happy.

Normally I wouldn't mix rounds in a match but I had them loaded in the event my score was less than perfect and I already had nothing to lose so I switched over.
Both rounds were loaded the same. 42.85 gr of N160 with Fed 210M in Peterson 243 LRP brass sized for 6SLR. Necks expanded with .2435 mandrel and measured .2415 after giving me 15 thou neck tension. Bullets seated ~ .040 jump.

Maybe there's a farm somewhere that has some animals who need harvesting.
That's probably the only place my F-class gun work work.

Someone out there will get curious and show us the results.

Nose Ring'ing is taken from Submarine Hull technology. It create's, in theory, a buffer of air to help the bullet throught the air particles. It's kinda neat it's being used to help expansion. "One small step for Man", little baby steps can lead to big things in the future of bullet technology perhaps.
