Dating a 40XB rimfire

I have a rebarreled 40XB and would like to know if the SN alone can date the action.

You may get close, but the barrel code is the only real way to date them.

Went through this question with someone else recently.
The XBs came out in 62 or 63 when R switched to the R700 action. I‘ve seen pics of some from that time period that seem to have mixed parts, as in straight 40x bolts and 700 style actions.

If you do some digging on the web and look for pictures and stories of guns with the barrels still on th‘em so you can get the barrel codes and find the serial numbers you can get probably get close.

It does perform well.

Mine is a sub 600 serial number that I got from a BR guy who wasn’t shooting enough to need a backup. It’s re barreled and will shoot to the capabilities of the ammo and the trigger puller.

I believe you. I don’t have the barrel anymore so I can’t verify it. Was just going by memory. At 73 i tend to lose a few digits every now and then

Remington Year of Manufacture Codes maybe found on the barrel of your Remington rifle [or shotgun] on the left side, just forward of the receiver; the first letter of the Code is the month of manufacture, followed by one or two letters which are the year of manufacture. For shotguns with removeable barrels, the code will be valid for the manufacture of the barrel; maybe for the receiver, as barrels do get switched around.

According to the "Blue Book of Gun Values", the coding continues as follows:

Yes sir, but not having the barrel we can get close to the era it was produced by serial number.

I would say the Spring of 1962. The 700 came out in 1962.

I do know its the older straight bolt handle and the bolt is the original matching bolt.
